| Help! need food suggestions to bring camping! | ||
| May 16 2008 19:31 | ||
I'm going camping this weekend and need some healthy suggestions to bring. In the past (before I was losing weight) I would bring hot dogs, beans, chips, candy, marshmellows. All the good camping stuff, but it's sooo bad so I want to bring some better healthier stuff. HELP!! We will have a cooler with ice in it, but it might melt so I can't have things that will spoil very easily. |

Beans are still good to take, just try to find some that are low sodium (and low sugar if you can find em). turkey or chicken dogs are slightly better than regular (they have tofu ones too, but i havnt tried them) Chicken breast is great if you have a grate to put over your fire. make your own trail mix with your favorite nuts, dried fruit, and a few chocolate chips. Granola is good too (try to find a lower fat kind) cereal bars (i love fiber one bars). sandwiches are good too, try hummus on them yummmm! And carrot sticks are good, and most any whole fruit (especially oranges). And if you end up eating the old standby camp food, take an extra hike. |

| i don't think you need to cut out all the yummies - just leave the worst behind. i think most of us use more energy when we get away from home and out of the routine, so there's no great harm in a few treats. | ||

Awww, I haven't been camping in forever! This makes me want to go. Sorry I cannot seem to add any suggestions other than what is listed. But I do agree with pg. Definitely indulge a little. |

Fruits and veggies, fat free hot dogs, light bread to use as buns, jerky, diet sodas, oatmeal, hard boiled eggs, instant soup, bouillon. |

oh, and just make sure you hike, hike, and hike and drink TONS of water... I always get bloated from camping food! and, go pick up a pie iron.. you can find them at Dick's or Wal-Mart... you can get cast-iron ones but if you aren't an avid camper, I wouldn't worry about it. Then you just spray the pie iron with pam, add bread and "guts" (lol) close and stick in the fire for a few minutes! Sandwich possibilities are endless with this... My fav's are pizza pie irons and turkey/cheese pie irons... cheese and tomato is awesome too... and don't forget to take stuff for s'mores ;) |

one thing and one thing only......BEEF JERKY. 1.2 oz of the stuff is just 100 cals and 18 grams of protein. |

Smores are an awesome treat even on a diet. Graham crackers and marshmallows are barely any calories at all and you only need to use one square of chocolate to make it! |

Veggie burgers on the grill are great! I dunno if you use something like a grill we do. |
