Stretch Marks bluenote
  May 16 2008 16:24

When my doc had me on steroid medication I gained weight so quickly I developed stretch marks on my inner thigh, hips, lower back, breasts and inner arms. After losing weight (42lbs) the ones that are on my arms are barely noticeable (they were purplish before) along with the ones on my breasts. Anyone else has stretch marks? Are you using anything for it (yeah I know they would NEVER completely go away). When you started losing weight did they become less noticeable?

This stuff, bio-oil, is the best thing you can gtet from stretch marks and scars. My sisters pregnancy stretch marks have faded loads since she started using it.

:( im so sorry steroids are horrible... but yeah I do have them some on my stomach which are from weight increase and some on my arms from muscle and fat. but they are really faded (just looks like scars) and you are right they will never 'go' they will just fade to the tone of your skin... people are having loads of treatments like surgery and lasers which I recommend you dont have cause they are drastic, expensive and painful. You can try using coco butter that apparently softens scars. i dont see why that would and not a moisturiser though.

I agree bio oil is great i've used it quite often it really does make a noticable difference.

However its quite greasy and i know it brings some people out in spots and rashs, one of my friends found it did terrible things to her skin, she uses cocobutter instead look for the sort used by pregant women .. stretch marks are stretch marks after all she found that helped.

Thanks for the resposes. I have tried cocoa butter have no idea if it's improving or not. How long does it take before they fade to the color of your skin? I've had mine for a yr. and they're still all purply.

I second -or third!- the Bio Oil, its actually amazing - really reduces them, well worth being sticky for a few months! lol!

Oh man, I have a ton of stretch marks on my stomach from being pregnant with my first back in 2003.  They are almost all faded now, so I guess it takes a couple of years for them to really fade, and I have used a ton of cocoa butter so maybe that has helped, but I don't know for sure!

One thing that may make a lot of people feel better is that every woman has strech marks. even if it's just a few to loads.

Speaking as someone who has seen many women naked or just in their knickers, OK that sounds a little wrong but I used to be a beauty therapist & had to spray tan many a nude man & woman & they all have them from either puberty, weight gain/loss & pregnancy. I have loads of them, my stomach is like a faded road map! Moisturising them definetly helped.

Same goes for cellulite. Everybody has some. I once read that 90% of women have cellulite. I used to tell my clients this when they asked me about it - "Apparently 90% of women have cellulite, so if you don't have it you're a freak" Laughing That always made them & myself feel better about it.

coco butter is a myth I think.  I used it when I was pregnant and my stomach looks like a road map now.  I hope you can find something that works great.  And if you do let me know!

When I was a teenager, I had quickly gained weight and some booty. I had really bad stretch marks. I had never thought that I could try to speed up the process, so I let them naturally fade. I lost the weight I had gained in the first year, but it took around 5 years before I couldn't see the marks anymore. Now I've gained some weight again, mostly in the same place. Wouldn't you know, I have stretch marks again. Last night I was researching the topic and everything I found said just to keep the areas moisturized daily. There were different suggestions, but they were all essentially the same -- moisturize often. I don't really know if it matters what you use, though everyone has their ideas of what works better.

As for personal experience with products, a long time ago someone suggested extra virgin olive oil (emphasis on extra virgin). It was strange, but I tried it only a couple of times over night. My skin was softer, but I couldn't take feeling so oily lol. So I think I'm going to stick with normal body lotions this time. I guess just try to use moisturizers that are good for your skin.

Good luck with whatever you try, and let the world know if you find a miracle product. :)

in denmark, the recommendation is almond oil - i found it quite greasy, though, and just did ordinary lotion - i still have my marks, but they have faded so much that i hardly think about it anymore - these days it's more the general feel of my skin getting older that worries me :-)

is it weird that i actually like being able to see my stretch marks? it makes me feel good about how hard i worked.

#17 snehvide May 19 2008 09:42

lol startreadingstopeating - good thing you focus on that :-) My stretchmarks remind me of insanely fast weight gain (when i was 15/16, living in the US and my skin still so firm that it couldn't stretch that far so fast Undecided), so for me it used to be quite different and embarrassing, but now, at 34, i really don't care anymore...(ahhh, old age has it's privileges :-))
