Addicted to Laxatives? marekat
  May 16 2008 00:00

Heh, I don't even know if I spelled that right.  =/

My friend told me today that she is addicted to laxatives.  I knew she had been using them to purge, but now she says that she can't even go a day without using them, even if she tries.

How can I help her with this?  Is it just like kicking any other addiction?  Abstinence?

It's very hard.
I would relate it to being an alcoholic.

Encourage her to seek help, because this type of addiction is terrible on the body, so she may need medical advice.
If she won't go to a doctor or a nurse, you may need to rat her out yourself, as bad as that sounds.
Over time, laxative abuse leads to SERIOUS complications.

>.<  I was afriad of that.  I tried telling her what she told me:  "When you throw up too much you eventually throw up poop!"  So I said she might start pooping barf, but even though she knows it's bad she can't stop. :[ :[ :[

thank you for your advice :]

She should really see a GI doctor, they can help get you off of laxatives safely!

You know, I don't know what is up with laxatives.

When I was going through that phase (thank god it's over), I remember hating laxatives.

They tasted horrible, the pills ugh.

Don't even remind me of the 'chocolate laxatives' that tasted like chocolote mixed with peptobysmol.

If you're really concerned and afraid I would reccomend going to your guidance councelor.

That's what my friends did for me, and I'm so glad they did.

She might be pissed off at you (I was) but in the end my friends helped me.

Sh**, my friends saved me.

Not only from possible death, but from looking like a walking skeleton.

It wasn't hot, and I do beleive that magazines, ecspecially celeb gossip magazines glamourize e.d's. They're not a pretty thing. Not at all.

This is a very serious issue. A few years ago I was in the hospital for a few weeks, my roommate had the same problem. She ended up having to have half of her intestines removed, do to complications with addiction to laxatives. Do what ever you can, to get your friend help. Good luck.

You definitely need to tell someone about it if she's not willing to get help herself (and oftentimes people like that aren't...). Talk to your guidance counselor if you're in school or talk to her parents. It may seem like you're betraying a friend at first, but addiction to laxatives is extremely dangerous and can lead to irreversible damage to her digestive system.
