| How healthy is granola? | ||
| May 15 2008 20:23 | ||
Hello all, I'm a person who is at a healthy body weight, possibly trying to bulk up a bit, so I'm into the market for healthy, higher calorie foods so I don't have to eat 20,000 pounds of food at every sitting. I was wondering if granola was a good choice to eat in between meals. Specifically, I was looking to have this granola I bought at a market analyzed. I can't remember the brand name, but it is blueberry flavored, has 220 calories for 3/4 cup 7 grams of fat, .5 saturated 35 grams of carbs( I can't remember how much sugar) 5 grams of protein It tastes... a little too sugary and sweet to be healthy, but it might just be me overreacting. ANy input would be helpful. |

Granola tends to be really high in artificial sugar. If you're looking for calorie dense foods, I suggest trail mix. You can even make your own with your favorite nuts and dried fruit! Yum. I wish I could afford the extra calories (although, I'm a total sucker for the non-healthy kind--you know, the one with M&Ms...) |

ah gotcha, I knew it tasted pretty sugary. It just seemed like the healthy thing to do at the time haha. I mean, servings at a time might not tear me up to bad, but i'm thinking of going trail mix like you said, I like that idea. Just gotta watch the fat content in em though. Thanks for your response. |

I make my own granola so that I know what is in it, and you can vary the amount of sugar as needed. I like the granola in my natural yogurt and berries. |

Yeah, I make my own granola too. http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Megans-Granola/Detail.aspx That's the basic recipe that I use, though I usually throw in a cup of coconut 10 minutes before the end. The cooking time listed there isn't nearly enough for that amount. It also makes a ton of granola, so I either end up giving a bunch away or halving that recipe. It's a really tasty recipe, and you can adjust the sweetness to your taste. As it's written, it's just sweet enough, but not too sweet. It'll take a little work, but you'll have breakfast for a month (or more) if you make that. I like it with yogurt and frozen blueberries. |

Nature's Path makes an amazing granola, Pumpkin Flax is by far my favorite flavor, but it only packs 140 calories for 1/2 a cup and is made from all organic and naturally-occuring substances. Give it a try, you can find it at Trader Joes or any grocery store, generally in the health food section... |
