| Breakfast, really a vital meal? | ||
| May 15 2008 17:11 | ||
I am a new member here since the 13th of May. I've always been told that skipping breakfast is never good for a healthy diet. Well for the past 10 years I occasionally eat breakfast and normally just wait until lunch to eat. So, in all my question would be, does skipping breakfast affect dieting and if so how? |

It depends on your body. I can't ever eat much for breakfast, but I do feel that it gives me more energy for the day. I stick to a whole wheat english muffin and light yogurt (and lots of coffee, i'm not a morning person)

breakfast has been "vital" for me. i used to skip breakfast all the time, and sometimes lunch, too. then i would make up for it later in the day and have a hard time sleeping. and i don't mean it took me 30 minutes to fall asleep; i mean i would sometimes go three weeks at a stretch without sleeping more than 2 or 3 hours, usually around 5-7am.
once i started eating breakfast, my metabolic schedule lined up with my sleep schedule. now i typically stop eating by 7 or 8pm, sleep well for 7 or 8 hours, and wake up hungry and energized. it has made a huge difference in my life. |

I think that boost in energy that I get is my metabolism kicking in (I'm no expert, so take all I say with a grain of salt, haha!) |

Thanks for the comments, guess I will have to make the attempt to get up a bit earlier and eat something good in the mornings!!! LOL. Besides cereal what are some good breakfast foods besides the normal, eggs etc. |

english muffin or bagel with peanut butter or lite cream cheese is quick, good in the car, and has both carbs and protein :) yogurt with fruit
bran muffin breakfast has to be easy otherwise i'm too tired to deal with it :P |

Calories eaten earlier in the day are utilised better than ones you eat later, and apparently those who skip breakfast are more likely to suffer from weight problems. Eating breakfast can also stop you from snacking throughout the day, and it wakes you up too. |

There is a relationship between eating breakfast and maintaining a healthy weight, but I haven't seen any research that shows causality. It could be that there's a third factor that causes both of those :) I know it makes me feel better, even though i need to keep it light

Original Post by pgeorgian: i have this exact same problem! and i too have found if i eat breakfast and spread my calories out thru out the day i sleep better. Yesterday i skipped breakfast and couldnt sleep last night, but the whole week before i ate breakfast and slept fine! (ive had difficultly sleeping for a year in a half and never realized it was because of my eating habits).... but this is off topic lol Skipping breakfast does depend on the person, if you feel you should eat something (because you are supposed to or something) have a slice of toast (whole grain) with a small amount of peanut butter, or cottage cheese. If you feel breakfast is a waste of time than dont eat it. If you like breakfast enjoy it. |

Wow, thanks everybody for the insight. I didn't have breakfast this morning as I was rushed to get my girls (2 Golden Retrievers) out and then head off to work. So hopefully I can start my breakfast kick tomorrow and see if that makes a difference. Thanks again. |

Its hugely important! First of all, it gets your metabolism going because your body needs to start processing that food to break it down. The next benefit is that you can get through the whole morning without feeling totally hungry til lunch time. When I did not eat breakfast, I would be FAMISHED by 10:30 and then really pig out at the dollar menu drive through to get something quick. It was such a bad habit! I think eating breakfast is really key in weight loss and just staying healthy and in control. |

fyrfli, why was that irrelevant? it was totally relevant!
and i want to clarify that although i'm a big breakfast advocate (BIG), i don't get all riled up about a balanced breakfast. i try to balance my diet on a daily and weekly basis, but if i have a breakfast that's all carbs and fat or all protein and fat, i don't worry much about that. i can have an egg & sausages for breakfast, pasta for lunch, and a salad for dinner. you know? |

Wow this is great!! Eating breakfast does help you control your apetite through out the day AND help you sleep better. I've suffered from insomnia for nearly a year now and its horrible. Eating breakfast has helped a lot....point to take home..EAT BREAKFAST!! :) |
