What do you do when you're with friends? hannikate

On the weekends, when you go out with friends or go to spend the night somewhere, what do you do? Do you call it a "free day", or keep on dieting? Also, what do you do during the summer? Personally, I'm over at my best friend's house every other day (literally) during the summer, and I find it extremely hard to stay away from the junk she eats (she's one of those "naturally thin" people that eat like they should weight about half a ton), and even if I plan to eat healthily, I tend to give in.  How do you do it? I'm just really curious.

normaly when I'm with my friends, I have something planned. we don't just do nothing. for example, we will go downtown, either go to starbucks or go to a health food resturant, and then go see a show. Or if we hang out at someones house, we stay active. I find it helps to tell them about my healthy plans. Maybe ou could suggest your friend coming oer your house, that way you know exactly what is in your house so you can snack on helthier options like fruit.

best of luck!

is it possible to tell her that you are on a diet? even if she still won't offer you anything vaguely healthy, it would explain the fact that you are hoarding celery sticks in your purse Innocent

I used to have dinner with friends every Monday night, but I had to stop because even after telling them about getting healthy, they still cooked food I didn't want to eat anymore.  Or they would just order pizza when we got there.  :(  Now we eat dinner at home, and go to their house after.

I usually end up going to her house, and I have been able to resist temptation before, but it's really hard to right now for some reason.  I'm not on a "diet", I'm just trying to watch what I eat.  I'm recovering from anorexia, and I just want to get healthy the right way, not by shoveling oreos down my throat.  I try telling her that I'm going to not eat junk and that I'm just going to remain eating healthy, even at her house.  However, she'll accidently tell me to try some of this new ice cream she picked out, and she'll beg me to take just ONE bite.  So, I do.  Then, I can't help but have a bowl, and then I go crazy on the junk food.  But, I can just tell her straight out how I'm going to be doing this, and hopefully she'll get it when I tell her not to even offer me anything. lol

Thank you all for the advice!

when i go to a friend's or out for an event i tend to miss meals anyway.. there's no time to eat, lol.

probably not good, but it doesn't happen too much.

but i definitely don't eat their foods because they're not the same as mine and they tend to be pretty high in calories.

I usually plan it out perfectly. Just today though, I was too hungry. I went for a nice 6KM run though, so I had a piece of pizza. I feel like crap now, to be honest. I find if I can skip the crap my buds eat, I just feel alot better.

First off, think of it as a new life - NOT a diet.

Dieting comes to an end - and that's where people get off track. Because they reached their goal, the diet it over. And since the diet is over, they go back to old ways. And the wicked process starts all over again. Gain weight, diet. Lose weight, stop dieting. Slowly gain weight, start dieting. Lose weight, stop dieting.

You see... its a cycle. Thinking of your weight loss goals as a diet is not the right way to go about life.

You need to make healthy choices for the rest of your life.

My motto: everything in moderation. Wink

You will forever be faced with social gatherings, vacations, unplanned dinners eating out, too little time to cook, ect.

Like others said: plan ahead.

I always (and I mean ALWAYS) have a few handy snacks around that I know will help curb my cravings. I tried to downsize my purse but I can't because I always carry:

  • 1 bottle of water that I can refill
  • 1 granola bar (Quakers - peanut butter chocolate chip or strawberry vanilla)
  • pack of gum
  • portioned snack bag of peanuts or almonds
  • carrot sticks

Now, don't get me wrong. I'll have a few fries and a bite of a cheese steak ... but that's it. Then I'll reach for my carrot sticks and peanuts and happily chew on them because I know exactly how many calories they are and that they will fit in my daily allowance.

Slow down. Sometimes you will notice that just tasting a food is enough --- you don't need to necessarily fill up on it.

And if you really want to have some of the junk food - then be willing to cope with the consequences: you may have to sacrifice something later in the day, you may have to exercise  a little more, or you may find it just isn't worth it for you.

Try not to impulsively eat - instead take a look at your options. Think ahead to the rest of your day and ask yourself: is this worth it now to eat a bag of tostitos plus chips ahoy and an ice cream sundea? or... would I rather feel good about my decision and eat a healthy well rounded meal later tonight and have room for my dessert then -- perhaps even an ice cream sundae.

At every moment in life you are faced with making a decision... this is just one of them.
