| My 5 year old | ||

| My five year old came over and picked up a dumbell with 15lbs on it and held for 10 seconds before I interviened and complaining it was heavy and set it down carefully...
His back remained straight the whole time and I guided him i case he dropped it. Thought best not to do anything other than let him complete what he was wondering and finding out. Kept him off them since, but surely a 5 year old shouldn't be able to do this... Currently 4`2 and 60lbs weight. Large frame..... ni fact almost the same as me in a linear measurement!!! |

A chip off the old block eh! :) Hey he sounds like a tough little kid. 15lbs is quite a lot of weight to pick up. I'm sure he's only copying what he has seen his dad doing. I don't know if there is any harm in him be able to lift this much though, however you were right to warn him as that weight would definitely hurt him if he were to drop it. My 3 year old son tries to copy everything I do so I guess you have to watch what you do but then again you have to let them explore things as well. |

| Heh, Lon Kilgore has something to say about training for youth - though 5 might be a little young to start with olympic lifting, he's got potential, and as long as you make sure he doesn't overdo it, you can probably let him play :) | ||

I have a friend who got her kids balls and little dumbells so they could work out with her if they wanted to. It is funny watching all of them doing pilates. I think it is great. Kids should be encouraged to exercise as much as they want. If it becomes a habit, maybe they won't have to go through what we are. |

My 2.5 year old does deadlifts with 5lb dumbbells in each hand, she copies me to a T! Its so funny she bends over picks them up then down again and counts to 10 all in one lift ( i really think watching me is how she learned to count), then she puts them down, wipes her brow and goes to the table and pretends to write something. I always record my reps/sets/weights in each session. She also squats and lunges, overhead press (with 2lb's) and curls! I should really get it onto youtube or something, its hysterical. It keeps her involved while i'm working out, and its good for her! Rock on babies! Patty |

My 4 year old does not lift weights, but I am amazed at how much she can lift and carry. She routinely helps me with the laundry, full baskets she carries to the laundry room and it is at the end of our apartment complex. She will carry the detergent, bleach... I have even seen her tote a 15lb bag of rice in the house from the car. Only after she carries it does she complain it was heavy. I just thought she was strong... you may have a strong one too.

That's awesome! If a 5yr old can pick up a 15lb dumbell, then *gasp* a grown woman can certainly pick one up and do a few sets. Right on! |

Sometimes I can't believe how strong kids are. Just go to the playground and watch them on the monkeybars. Fearless and unbelievably strong! |

My boy used to pick my weights up and swing them around. I figured he'd drop one on a toe someday, but no. . .he clopped himself in the forehead! Fortunately they're tougher than we think as well as stronger. Although now that my son is nine, carrying his empty backpack inside from the car seems to be too much to handle. . .lol |
