| Is a snack a day O.K | ||
| May 15 2008 03:56 | ||
This may be a Stupid Observation but I just started CC.com about 3 weeks ago ( April 22) I have lost about 10 pounds, am excersizing quite a bit more and slowly eating healthier choices of my favorite foods, Wheat spag instead of regular, sweet potatoes instead of white , wheat and multigrain bread instead of white and so fourth. but I read constantly on the boards people who say cut out the sweets, cut out this and that. It's a life style change and slowly but surely make people who have a snack now and then feel as though they have done something wrong. Now I know it's not the majority of people who are on the boards and realize that they in there own way are trying to help but I am gonna say that when responding to a post , keep it positive and understand not everyone is able to lead the perfect ( nor should they ) dietary life. There are plenty of reasons why eating healthy 24/7/365 is impossible for almost everyone 1. Healthy food is not always available when you need to or want to eat. 2. Eating healthy is expensive Good bread, pasta, cheese, and vegetables cost a great deal more that 99cent bread, raviolis spaghetti Os and kraft mac and cheese. and lets face it 3. Kids Kids Kids cause stress stress stress and sometimes a little snack relieves a lot of stress ( which is probably more healthy than eating a carrot stick at that moment) 4. Life style changes are hard and I think( Like MOST on the boards) that slowly changing a habit a month is probably best . and you may not want to give up dessert EVER 5. Life is supposed to be enjoyable that includes eating. so once again if its whithin your calories for the day I say go for it. LOL this rant probably makes no sense but I have been reading to many post New and realy old and it seems that some people feel as if there way of eating is the only way. G*d forbid anyone have a candybar at the end of a stressful day or endulge once a week in a LARGE ICECREAM cone instead of a Tofu Sunday with Flax and wheat grass. well enough of a rant . I say once and for all if you don't want to snack and have the Calorie allowance THEN DO IT and don't feel guilty. If you are above your Calories then maybe ( refrain ) but don't let anyone make you feel bad about your choice. because all in all it is YOUR choice. Back to the life style change gonna go drink some water and head to bed . Night All |

Most of the diet industry is all about shame, in my opinion. I agree that it is perfectly healthy to eat a snack, even an unhealthy one once in a while. Sometimes ice cream is a mental health food :) I've been losing weight, albeit slowly, and I have a very balanced diet that does occasionally include a piece of candy, or cake, or something else that the "OMG I ate a whole thousand calories today i'm sooooofat!!1!!!1!1!" crowd would cringe at. It makes it much easier to eat much healthier much more of the time. |

The thing is, in my opinion, it is wrong to lose weight on a diet. If you think of it like being "on a diet" and then when you lose the weight you go "off the diet," you are bound to just gain back what you lost. If you want to lose weight succesfully and keep it off, you need to adopt a different mindset. If you love candy bars and ice cream, you'd better find a way to work a candy bar or a bowl of ice cream into your lifestyle change. Don't eat them everyday, but either make an allowance for them as treats every once in a while or find a more healthy alternative. And you know what? Even if you don't have the calorie allowance and you want that scoop of ice cream, I say do it. Going over you calorie budget every once in a while is good to keep your metabolism going. Just go back to healthy foods the next day. For instance, I like my alcohol, so I still have a Sam Adams or 2 most nights or a glass of wine, so I allow for it. And you know what else? If I want a third one, what the hell, I'll go a few calories over for one day. I've made the mistake before of trying to go 100%, and I always lost some weight and then just started to miss some of my old vices, and went 'off' the diet. This time, I am trying a new philosophy to allow me to stick to it. If I try to be 'good' 90% of the time, then I can be 'bad' the other 10% and still lose the weight. In fact, many diet plans encourage this as a way to eat better for life, instead of just until you lose the weight.
And there you go, I just added some of my rant to yours :). |

I eat ice cream pretty much every day. I'm a "tea time" person. I eat small bites in the am & when tea time rolls around I eat a small portion of something delicious. I eat an awesome small (portioned) dinner & usually some wine. Today I ate a warm chocolate vitamuffin with 1/4 cup of sugar free ice cream & topped with reddi whip & sugar free syrup. It was awesome. Sometimes it's fruit salad or an omlette. Today I wanted ice cream. I don't think it's horrible, I think it's awesome. It's my lifestyle. Not for everyone. |

I've been here about 6 weeks and I have to say, I don't run into a lot of "doom on you" posts about eating snacks/sweets. There are different eating habits for different fitness goals. And some people are fighting "addiction" with certain foods so they have to stay away from them. So, there are people who promote "clean eating" and other styles of "pure diets". They usually do that for a specific reason though, and I don't think that there is an overreaching agenda to promote "orthorexia" for average dieters.

lol...sister, if many of the posters on this site knew what my diet consisted of they'd all probably have heart attacks by proxy! The funny thing is, I had my cholesterol tested this week and it's 155, and my entire lipid panel is darn near perfect.

Original Post by carleyrapp: LOL I agree, totally!!! I'm one of those leaning toward eatting more natural. But, I also realize I'm human. I, too, allow for a night cap of a glass of wine; and I almost always have a 3 small afterdinner mints. However, I do allow for them and if I go over my goal calorie total for the day, I forgive my self and keep working on improvement. I just changed to maintainence but I'm still weighing, watching my calories (so I don't start to gain), and continue to work toward eatting heathier and at 64 living longer. Don't worry about other people, do what seems right for you & your family. You are moving in the right direction and eatting the whole grain breads & pastas is a great start. Not only are you beginning to improve your own health but that of your family. If you don't allow them to eat sweets & teach them to eat sweets in moderation by example they will over do it when they grow up and may end up weighing too much. Keep up the good work, Grandma Patsu |

I love food. I enjoy food. And I have a sweet tooth the size of the moon. Yesterday I managed to include two slices of cakes into my day and I am still on the steady decline on the scale - but also eating much healthier most of the time which is what I concentrate most on this site. And the healthier I eat the more I get to fit into my daily allowance which makes this awesome and work for me!!! I've also been known about once a month to swap half a Snickers chocolate bar for the banana I packed in my lunch if I feel like it. Not the end of the world! I've learned that portion control, planning and being prepared is key to managing weight and throwing in a favourite food/sweet/snack into a lifestyle eating plan is NOT the end of the world. Everything works in moderation! (Except perhaps the bottle of wine I intend on consuming this long weekend... that's just for fun!) Three cheers to FOOD!!! And four cheers to feeling better about ourselves and our lifestyles!!! |
