| Holy Moly - I don't know portion sizes: do you? | ||
| May 15 2008 03:38 | ||
So yea, I just got done eating my favorite dinner of ALL time: Salmon baked with Clam Sauce (made with clams & their juice, shallots, parsley, white wine, garlic, thyme, olive oil - lots - & oregano) and man was it FABULOUS - but I must admit to you all: My father & I got a 2 pound piece of salmon & I ate about 1.2 pounds of it! Yikes - BOY do I NOT know portion sizes at all! With this meal I had steamed asparagus & purple cabbage, along with some undressed salad, so I guess that is not too terrible and the only other things I had for the day were like 7 ounces of ostrich & 2 ounces of free-ranged beef so I don't think calories wise I am too terrible, uh if you consider like 3000 calories terrible! ha ha! I think I just got a protein over load, but I pretty much eat about 2 pounds of meat a day so yea! ha ha! PS - I worked out for 99 minutes today on the elliptical so I wasn't completely idle all day! Who else has MAJOR portion distortion and how do you deal with it and what foods do you say "oh forget it" to?? |

I admit to having got very fat in the past, partly through eating junk, but also through serious lack of portion control. I was cooking for an army and eating it myself! The solution for me was to invest in a good set of kitchen scales and keep them out on the worktop next to the chopping board. For a long time, everything I cooked was weighed first. And even now, despite having a much better idea what the 'right' portion-sizes look like for me, I prefer to weigh things like rice and pasta rather than guesstimating. I try to get some protein at each meal. For me a portion of protein would be 3oz red meat, 4oz cooked beans, 2 eggs, 1oz of nuts, seeds or cheese or 5oz white meat/fish. Alongside a portion of carbohydrate... 2oz bread, cereals, dry noodles/pasta/rice/grain, or 6oz starchy vegetables such as potatoes/sweet potatoes. |

Wow. A pound or more of any meat is a LOT - and I'm a guy. That being said, keep in mind that the cooked weight and calories of salmon (or any other meat) and post-cooking weight will be significantly different. Make sure you've got that tracked correctly.
I guess I'm fairly picayune about portion control. I weight every serving of meat I eat and only eat enough to get my protein for the day. That's basically about 6-8 oz. (cooked) of chicken breast per day or equivalent in other meats. I feel like that is a lot of meat, so yeah, a lb of salmon is a lot. Salmon is an excellent food, but it does have a lot of fat and calories - might be good to watch the portions a bit more cloesly next time. |

| Eating pounds of meat a day is not healthy - no matter what type of flesh you're eating. That includes fish. You are most definatley on a protein-overload which is terrible for your kidneys. Tone it down a little. | ||

Well, I ate a 1.5 lb corned beef brisket on Monday, lol. It wouldn't fit in my food scale, so that is just an estimation |

Random question. . . .not pertaining to portion sizes. But, giasbach6260 said that she ate steamed purple cabbage. Does purple cabbage taste the same as green cabbage? The only thing I have ever used purple cabbage for, is a science fair project when I was about 10 or 11. I haven't actually eaten it (outside of small pieces in bought salad, which I can't even seem to taste anyway). I am just curious, because the store I was in the other day only had purple and I really wanted cabbage and didnt purchase it because I thought it might taste different. Thanks! |

hey natlyann - purple & green cabbage taste relatively the same & each have their own healthful benefits! I would eat as much of both of them as you can! Steamed cabbage is really delicious with fish! :) |

uh so I weighed out about 3 oz of grilled halibut for dinner tonight... since it was already cooked, that means it was more than 3 oz?? |

Original Post by sydney3990: It was more than 3 0z when it was raw. When you enter your calories, make sure it says 3 oz cooked, not raw. |

*is named Moly and is certainly not holy* I just finished eating a little less than half a pound of meatloaf. I consider that to be pretty damned big, but I'm maintaining (or at least attempting to) and can roll like that. |

I also like to eat large portions. I don't think there's anything wrong with it, as long as you're within your calorie guidelines. It goes against the common diet tip, but I like to eat three big meals instead of six small ones. Just do what works for you. Also, if you like to eat a lot, go for less calorie dense foods. I can eat a whole pound of cauliflower for 105 calories. And cauliflower is good! It feels kind of unlady-like to eat large servings of meat, but I do it anyway. XD Grass fed buffalo ftw. (Lower calorie than chicken!) |

| I ate a lot of salmon today as well. They served me 2 decent sized pieces of salmon. But I don't know portion sizes either, so I'm at a lost about the ounces or weight..... any sample pics? or a good way to judge? | ||

I must say I am completely over the top with portion sizes and I always read places that for specific body weights, specific grams of protein will suffice... but YEA RIGHT! I am supposed to eat about 50 grams of protein which equates to... 1.7 ounces! HA HA HA!!!!! I eat about 32 ounces a day! Obviously it is not too terrible for the body because I am still functioning... Well, maybe I shouldn't talk to soon! LOL!!! |

I feel best when I eat around 75. It varies for everybody, I think. |
