Rice Krispy Treat vs. Nature Valley Granola Bar ... can a krispy treat really be better for you than a granola bar? lessin08

Okay here are the numbers

Nutrition    /Treat         /Bar

Calories     90         &nbs p;       180

Fat         &nb sp;   2.5                 6

Trans Fat  0           ;           ; 0

Sat Fat     1           ;           ;  .5

Cholesterol 0           ;        0

Sodium       105         &nb sp;      160

Carbs         & nbsp; 17         &nbs p;     29

Fiber         & nbsp; 0           ;       2

Sugar          8           ;        11

Protein      0           ;        4

So although the granola bar has more protein, and fiber... the rice krispy treat is lower in fat, carbs, sugar and sodium. Does that make it a nutritionally better choice... or do the additional fiber and protein make a better option?

I am curious what you all think.

The bar is twice as much food, so the numbers for the rice krispy treat should be multiplied by 2 to really make a fair comparison.  When you do this, the bar wins on everything but the fat, and even then it's almost all unsaturated fat.  And fiber and protein are the first two things I look for on a nutrition label, so I think they do make a difference.  They're both treats, but the bar seems to have more going for it.

I think it depends on your fuel needs.  I personally don't care for any "granola" product because it's so high in fat and sugar for something that doesn't taste like a treat.

If you need to supplement your calories because you're running low, I'd recommend the granola bar because the sugars are less refined and there is fiber and protein.  But if you're just looking for a treat then the Krispy Treat may satisfy your sweet tooth for less calories.

I keep a stash of Reese's in the freezer.  At first I ate them once a day, the pack I have in there now hasn't been touched in two weeks.  But if I want sweet, I'm getting the real deal.

I am like mrsdagle...if I want a treat, I want the real deal.  I tend to eat less that way because I won't "eat around" what I really want.  so if I want something, I eat it.

I recommend making your rice crispy treats though...it literally take 2 minutes and you won't ahve the preservatives.  they are also good with cherrios and you get more nutrition.  or you can do chocolate rice...yummy...

How do you make them with cheerios?? That would be so yummy.

you make them exactly the same...5 cups cereal, 40 large marshmallows, 2 tbsp butter...

melt the marshallows & butter in the microwave.  1 min, stir, 30 seconds until melted.  Stir in cereal...spread in a 9x13

Random question:

Can you substitute the forty melted marshmallows with marshmallow cream from the jar? It sounds much easier than melting them. I bet you can.
