Online? :/

#2 loriklorik May 14 2008 07:01
yup, its a mmo (massive multiplayer online)... with single player games its hard to show off your all fancy things! :D
#3 p0nda May 14 2008 07:16

Dude. GTA4. nuff said.

May I also direct your attention here, where it shows, with pretty colours, how badly WoW had a corner on the MMO market and how increasingly difficult it has become to break in to that market. If I were willing to have my life sucked away by an MMO again I'd just go back to WoW. So no, can't say as I am looking forward I'm afraid.

GTA4 isnt my kind of game....way too shallow (its target is more for masses / younger then what i like).

As for wow... ick... its the wall-mart of mmo's. They had really great marketing and pulled in a lot of newbies who hadnt tried mmo's before (thats good for the industry overall). But...the game has very low quality (its actually just a rip-off of the mmo's that came before it. For those that played EQ1, you know what im talking about).

WoW was for the masses...dumbed down graphics to work on the most computers...simple combat system to appeal to greatest number....

Age of conan is more of the next generation mmo though. They seem to be doing a few things that is actually moving the industry forward (instead of the WoW approach of repackage the old). Which means (at least for me) they seem to be the top mmo in the market now (not top as in sales, but top as in quality).

I question their customer service a little though...and its not totally sure how much content is there (NDA still in place for a lot of things). So time will tell whats going to happen. But my time spent in beta i only saw very good things.

We got that the day it came out, which was the day before I had to leave for Europe, so I got to watch my brother play and then had to pack :/

At least he should be somewhat over it in 3 months when I return and I can play it :P

MMORPG is not my cup of tea, I'm so used to single player mode (and like it) that all those people running around me online kind of annoy me;)

But as for games... right now I'm waiting for Mass Effect for PC (yay!) and new mods and expansions for The Witcher. Also a couple of other RPG and action games coming soon (Fallout 3 in autumn)... yup, this is goig to be a good year :)

Guild Wars, man. Guild Wars. It's free.

#8 p0nda May 14 2008 14:33

That is such a crock. You're saying that WoW isn't good because it is a commercial success. Blizzard makes games that are fun to play, that is why they are a commercial success. For the most part these obscure games are not as popular because they simply aren't as good (there have been exceptions to this rule, but not so much these days). Have you ever thought that the reason WoW took elements of EQ was because EQ was so fun to play and so popular? I bet you're the type of person who won't like a band if they're popular too...

Dumb-ed down graphics to work on most computers? All MMO's do that, or have options to do that. Why? Because people can't afford to replace their computer every 5 minutes. WoW also came out 3 years ago, so the graphics engine is 3 years old; an eternity in computer terms.

Simple combat appeals to the masses because simple combat is fun. Fighting the controls to get things done doesn't make you special, it makes the game less appealing.

I also don't think you understand the cost of creating a new MMO from scratch. It doesn't make financial sense to create a new incarnation of the game every time you want to update the game. Oh but sorry, of course these people are in it to satisfy the whims of a fickle audience; they ought to sacrifice profit for the sake of the the few.

I'll look forward to Blizzard's next gen MMO, and look forward to SC2, because Blizzard are the best in the industry at creating fun and playable games. I'll also admit to liking Justin Timberlake and Eminem, so I guess I'm just not cool like that.

maybe it's because I've grown tired of the mmo hamster wheel in general, but aoc is nothing special.

WoW's graphics were unimpressive the day it came out.  I know, because I was playing it then.  As an ADD gamer, I have played most of them for six months to a year then I move on.  I will have to check out AoC.  Are they having an open beta?  Can I still get in?

I'm put off by the boobage. Cause y'know every guy is gonna be walking around topless. Though I don't know if they changed that since. I'm a big fan of MMO's, I've played FFXI (5 lv 75s) for 5 years, WoW (2 lv 70s) for 2 years now and GW for about 2 years (1 lv 20 and 1 lv 15) also. I've also played a whole bucket-full of free downloadable MMO's.

There is nothing wrong with WoW or any other popular MMO. I find the player base is horrible, people are immature and down right rude. I've only seen this in WoW... not in any other game I've played. I don't do well in a mean environment... which is why I rarely play WoW these days. I do miss the player base of FFXI and hope the next MMO SE makes has the same or similar player base. Not to say that there weren't asses, cause there was, just not found as often as in WoW. There's about 1 decent person to every 100 asses in WoW.

I'm a bit excited about Aion though. It's very GW-y graphic wise. I just hope its bigger than the GW world because I found the GW world very limited.

And GTA4 is very amusing. I love Kiki.

Hehe i have played almost every major (and a TON of minor) mmo's that have come out starting from UO.... if theres one thing i know, its mmo's :)

I say WoW sucks (though, perhaps sucks is a little harsh... more like average and mundane) because it didnt bring much new to the industry (the fact that they are popular doesnt have anything to do with if they are good or not... yet people keep pointing to their sales and saying "it has to be good!", they dont understand...).

As players, we want the games to advance and continue to give us the things we want. When a developer takes the easy way out and just repackages a bunch of stuff that has been done... its not really helping anyone. SWG attempt at a sandbox, EQ and UO models based on D&D, AC's combat and seamless world, CoH character generator.... these things (even though they dont always work) help make the games that come after them even better because of their attempts to push things farther.

Its just annoying to see newbies point at WoW as the mother of all MMO's when it really wasnt anything special (graphic wise, gameplay wise, concept wise) compared to the games ALREADY OUT when it first hit the shelves. Yea, it was a game, sure its a way to spend the time and might be fun... but it wasnt anything really mention worthy (other then the great marketing, though their use of viral marketers online to bash other games really stinks).

I was also put off by the player base in WoW.  I felt like was playing with a bunch of 14 year olds.  I am playing City of Heros right now because of the player base.  You get the occasional idiot, but most of the people you run into are mature and reasonably skillful players.  In the long run, that makes a huge difference.  Why would anyone want to spend time and money to be pissed off by a bunch of rude children (of any age)?

Lorik:  You played AC?  If so, you have been around for a while.  That was my first MMORPG.  It was a nice one at first.

I agree. WoW is a congregation of children, and sadly,  I loved it for the year or so I played.

Because I managed to find the few intelligent, humorous and skillful people on my server, I was surrounded by those I liked, or at the very least, could tolerate.

I tried City of Heroes, but the controls were funky to me. I loved the creation system though.

And yes, I'm a total girl girl, I loved Ragnarok.

I really wanna try City of Heroes but I don't have the money right now to give it a go and they don't have a trial version or any sort on their site. :/

#16 ignayshus May 14 2008 23:32

meh I suppose being in a guild that focused on end game content, but actively ran pvp groups and was well represented in the arena insulated me from the unwashed masses...

we didn't have a single guild member younger than in their 20's, everyone showed up for the three nights a week regardless if it was a progression run or farm... no server firsts, but we were always close behind.

and their was always a pvp group on the weekends AND ganking one of ours was practically begging to corpse camped until you logged.

all in all, it was the best mmo experience I'd had, although again it could just be the people I played with.

#17 loriklorik May 15 2008 02:04
Yea, those kind of people can really ruin a game (reason i dont play guildwars as much anymore... when it first came out, it wasnt near as bad as it is now).

For AoC i joined a 25+ guild and it seems so so much better playing them (in beta). Out of all the games, i think SWG (star wars galaxies) had the highest age curve (everquest back at the start wasnt too bad either, but it was ..umm...9 years ago, so i might be remembering that wrong :)
#18 p0nda May 15 2008 02:33

So, just to clarify, I am a newbie because I liked WoW enjoyed playing WoW and thought it was a good MMO? Irregardless of any and all MMO's I have played, and when I started playing them? Just checking.

Edit to rephrase.

#19 loriklorik May 15 2008 02:46
Nope, your not a newbie just because you like WoW (nothing wrong with liking wow)

"badly WoW had a corner on the MMO market and how increasingly difficult it has become to break in to that market."

But when you said this, that makes you a newbie hehe :) WoW increased (by a very large amount) the total market for MMO's....if anything, its EASIER to break into MMO's then it has been in the last few years. With such a bigger market, it makes it viable for games to go after niche areas with their MMO.

WoW is getting old... its already a few years old... so that HUGE market it has are going to start looking for newer things....as they are looking for new things, its GREAT for MMO's coming out now and for the next few years to pull away those WoW customers.
#20 cptbunny May 15 2008 03:02

WoW will probably get another huge post when the expansion pack comes out. I don't look forward to leveling my characters to 80. Yell
