| Coughing--should I go to the gym or wait? | ||
| May 14 2008 00:11 | ||
Hi All, ive been sick with a severe sinus infection that was causing drainage into my lungs since Tuesday-Wednesday of last week. I went to the doctor and got some steroids for my lungs (they were hurting really bad) and some other stuff. Well, im not feeling 100% yet and im still coughing alot today, but im really anxious to get back to the gym. Do you think I should wait another day or 2, or go ahead and go tonight and see how i do?? I dont want to cause a set back with this stuff, but I havent been to the gym since last Wednesday! *ETA that when I cough, I hear a squeak in my chest =| |

Wait. The dividing line is your neck - the rule of thumb is that sniffles and congestion above your neck won't be a problem, but any problems lower down will interfere with your workout, and the workout will interfere with the healing process. So, sad to say, but you'll be better off waiting a bit more. |

Thanks, Melkor. I think you are right. I still have quite a bit of chest congestion, so maybe another couple days will be the best thing to do. |

| If you want to stay on track and keep moving, you could do some mild stretching until you're feeling better. | ||

| My personal trainer told me that hard workouts temporarily suppress the immune system. Maybe you could take a walk and leave the bulk of your energy for fighting the infection. Please take care and I hope you feel better soon. | ||

The 'squeak' is narrowed air passages from congestion and inflammation. You really don't want to upset them any more by vigorous exercise. You might get a nasty asthma attack even if you've never had it before in your life. If you're feeling up to it, go for a GENTLE walk - a little fresh air does the soul good... but stop and rest if you're tired and don't overdo. |

thanks everyone. ive decided that i would rather feel a little guilty for not going, than to go and cause myself to get worse. ive been coughing for a week straight now and every day its a little better, but there is still obvious congestion in my chest...so...ill wait. |

I have has horrible sinus infections/allergies for a long time, until I bought something called a neti pot. You can buy it at most health food stores, it is basically nasal irragation.. I have used it only twice over the last 6 months and have not had anymore sinus problems, or sneezing not once!! It was actually featured on oprah.. It has changed my life... You shoud check it out. It looks like a tea pot, and it comes with a salt/salene powder that you mix with warm water, and basically pour it up one nostril and it comes out the other side, then repeat on the other side.. I know it sounds odd but wow what a differnce. No more sinus pills or allergy medication.. I know this doesn't answer your gym question, but it definltey could be helpful for future refernce |
