No motivation to work out- what do you all do? katereilly
  May 10 2008 17:36

I have a problem with working out- I just can't get myself to do it! I'll want to go and be like alright I'm going, then I just don't end up getting there. I'm losing weight with my diet but I would like to tone. I think part of it is that I have no idea what to do when I get to the gym. I kind of just wander around the gym. Anyone have any similar problems or helpful hints?

Hi!  I know how hard it can be to get started for some people.  What is your current height and weight?

We need a plan.

Firstly let's make a list , what are your goals? ( Once you understand your goals you will have something to work towards.)

examples I would like to lose 10 lbs, I would like to shed some fat, then build muscle to have that toned look

I would like to eat healthy to feel better, have more energy and as a bonus look better.

Next let's make a list of how you can achieve those goals for example

going to th e gym 4 times a week (what do I do at the gym, how can I find out what I should be doing?)

eating my fruits and veggies

keeping portions balanced etc.

thirdly reward yourself for your goals

If I get to a certain weight then I will treat myself to a manicure, pedicure, whatever you please.

So give us some more info on your stats and goals, we can give more suggestions once we have this info.

Take care.

I am 5'2" and my bathroom scale tells me that I am hovering between 118 and 119. I have lost 7 pounds in the last month and a half from drastically changing my diet.

I would like to be 115 pounds. I would also like to tone up everywhere. Mostly my stomach and love handles. I also want to be super healthy!

I used to go to the gym a lot, but I got sick and didn't show up once and it pretty much went downhill from there. I usually was on the treadmill for 20 minutes, then the elliptical, and then I would go aimlessly around in the machine room.

Thanks for the reply :)

you need to find something fun.

i really like turbo jam. i get pissy when i can't do my workout-that's how much i love it!

i also like jogging around the neighborhood (not on a boring treadmill-lol!) and swimming!

I've heard many good things about turbo jam and even recommended it to someone on this board simply because of word of mouth. I'll have to try it out myself! I can't wait till it gets warmer to swim :) Thanks for the reply!

you wont regret it. out of all exercises, turbo jam is my absolute favorite. i CANNOT go a day without it!

Frankly, focusing on an activity that targets your goal is easier than just "going to the gym" to workout.  You're close to your ideal weight but when I started exercising, I was terribly out of shape and very overweight.  I started on the basic way to get my heart pumping, powerwalking.  I'm doing more now and I can see myself continuing to increase my fitness goals.

But you have to start somewhere. I agree with the suggestions for fun workout tapes.

I just think about what I'm gonna look like a couple of months down the road :)

You can create workout logs for free online... Also, Try getting a workout buddy.. find someone you like at the gym who goes there similar times as you would like to... and most gyms, I know Golds Gym does, have people to help you. Just ask what they would recommend for certain muscle groups..

Get some resistance bands and google exercises, especially if you want to tone. It is pretty simple to just make up a 30 minute routine you can do pretty  much anywhere. For exampe you could  do these exercises: squats (3X10), lungles (3X10), jumping jacks, jog in place for 30 seconds and then do high jogs for 30 seconds, jump rope, push ups (3X10), do some ab work such as crunches or the bicycle. With the resistance bands you can do leg and arm work.
