Walking- How much is too much? journeyman
  May 09 2008 22:50

I have been calorie counting for 8 month's now and walking for exercise. I'm in the best shape that I have been in for years. The question is sometimes on weekends I'll walk for 2 to 3 hours at 3.5 mph is this too much? Is there a ratio for dieting and exercise? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Walking is so low impact you can probably do it all day if you want - it does not put too much strain on your joints, and you aren't at risk of overstraining your muscles after the first week or five assuming you stick to increasing your distance by 10% per week, just like for running.

It doesn't burn a whole lot of calories compared to running, biking or swimming, but you can keep it up for longer - personally, I frequently do mountain walks lasting 3-8 hours. The only thing you really need to pay attention to is your calorie intake and expenditure - as long as your daily deficit isn't too large, you're good to go.

Actually, humans are born to be long distance walkers. Millennia ago, when we were still nomads chasing food down for dinner, humans would walk for hours and hours on end, of course eating only what they had rationed out. So, walking for 2-3 hours is nothing to worry about.

As far as a diet to exercise ratio, there is not really a dividing line on "too much exercise." Just be sure to eat a sufficient amount of calories to satisfy your BMR. Any extra calories you burn through exercise or activities are extrinsic and you can just let any extra fat you have fuel your body for that.

As long as you have good shoes go for it!!!  I used to walk all the time for hours on the weekends too and loved it but because I was wearing cheap ass shoes I developed Plantar Fascititis and shin splints and now can't walk or run any distance

yet, it's all in the shoes.

And don't forget to stretch before and after!
