Clearing out the wardrobe ... abunaimah
  May 09 2008 15:36

Hi All, this is my first posting although I have commented on a lot of posts before. I didn't really introduce myself when I joined back in January 2008 because I was only interested in the calorie count tools (which are excellent and of course free!).

I'm at that stage of my weight loss where my former clothing no longer fits me. They look oversized on me now and I've emptied out the wardrobe and will give the clothing to charity.

I have mixed feelings about this though. Firstly it cost a lot of time and money to gather the contents of my wardrobe. The expense is one factor. The other is the regret that some of the clothing I've hardly worn. I don't like to be wasteful. The least I can do is give it to the poor.

On the other had I am ecstatic to have lost the weight to necessitate this and I have bought some new clothing and feel and look good (well as good as I can). I am not at my target yet but its all good.

I thought I'd share this milestone with you all and wondered if others were experiencing similar mixed feelings?

Yeah! I'm going through a similar circumstance. Luckily for me, though, I didn't have much of a wardrobe to begin with; just a bunch of baggy jeans and baggy shirts. There are a few killer pieces, but it's not like I can wear them now anyway,; and I never plan on going back to that weight, so I'm gonna have to give them away.

On a related note, I bought a new outfit just last night. I needed it too; I hardly have any clothing that fit now. I posted a pic of my new duds in the gallery. haha. I just hope I can pull off the look.

Congrats on the loss.

Once I get to that stage, I plan on taking my clothes in. Luckily I have a sewing machine and just about enough know-how to do it. I too have spent a lot of money on the clothes I have now, and I won't for one minute consider just giving/throwing them away.

You could always take your clothes to an alterations place if you can't do it yourself =]

Hey Mortalmonkey you look much better then before! Amazing difference from the baggy jeans and baggy shirts :)

Unfortunately I haven't uploaded photos yet but I will do soon. I definitely don't plan on going back to that weight again!

At least my wife is happy. She loves shopping and for the first time in years she spent a lot of time helping me shop just for me. Normally she spends that time for the kids and herself. Normally we just rush through my clothes shopping picking up the same old stuff. Now I'm in unfamiliar territory :)

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing.

Good job on the loss!

My problem with being fat is that I wore out my clothes a lot faster than when I was thin.  Food stains, bumping into things, spilling, ripping and just wear.  Before I gained weight I had clothes that lasted decades!!!

The recent weight loss and moving my husband out of the house has spurned me on to clean out my closets and find my skinny(er) clothes and get ready!

My problem now is that I'm not sure what my style is.  I'm only about halfway done losing weight (down 56 pounds!) but so far I've had to seriously clean out my closet and even get rid of the stuff that used to be too small and is now too big.  Now I realize that I bought things that fit, didn't make me look like a grandma/crazy person, and just tried to get in and out of stores quickly.  Now that I have more selection and am starting to like the way I look in clothes, I don't know what I like!

There are some things I'm sad to give away and even my husband wants to see me in it "one last time" but when I put it on, I look totally ridiculous.  There was one skirt in particular.  It was brown, hit just below the knee, and had some delicate lace at the bottom.  I really did love this skirt and I wore it in our engagement pictures about 5 years ago and when I tried it on a month ago it didn't stay on my hips.  There's a lot of memories stored up in old clothes and it's weird to get rid of them.  I can't have back-up fat clothes though, no way.  No freaking way.

Altering clothes would probably cost me more then its worth. The clothing is mainly trousers and shirts - everything else still fits sort of. I already adjust my trouser length (okay so the wife actually does that) as I am short. The shirts themselves would have to drop 2 sizes. I used to take a large and now I take a small (UK sizes - they also go by collar size. I used to wear 16in now its 14in).

Its a good idea if you can alter clothing and it still looks okay, I fear for me it wont look as good.

mrsdagle, I agree. I probably got through clothes faster due to the same reasons. The great thing is that I no longer bump into as much stuff or spill food :)

I've been overweight for over a decade and you go through a lot of clothes in that time. Periodically I have a clear out and give the items away to charity.

Thanks for all the replies! Have a great weekend! Looks like its gonna be nice and sunny here in London.

I've been going thru my closets once a month or so and giving everything that's officially too big to charity.  I refuse to go backwards regarding the weight loss so i don't want any big clothes in the house.  But I have kept a few nice expensive pieces that I'll have altered when I have the time.

I find the process quite motivating because I can now fit in most of the stuff in my closet that was too small before.  And the bigger stuff truly does look rediculous since I just swim in it now.

I have the same problem that someone above mentioned - now I don't know what my style is and I still have another 18-20 lbs to go til I reach goal, so I'm in an 'interim phase' clothes-wise.  When I shop for clothes I find it much more time consuming and find myself trying on scads of stuff I wouldn't have looked twice at before (because I knew it wouldn't fit).  The good news is that I can find stuff to fit now.  Yay!  Makes shopping so much more rewarding, although I still don't like it that much....

I was sooo glad to get rid of all my plus size 'granny' style clothing.  Gosh there really wasn't too much selection at the plus size stores around here.  The clothes to be seemed very outdated.

I donated 4 garbage bags full to the diabetes association.  I actually didn't spend too much on a new waredrobe either!  I shopped at walart (hey, before you laugh at that one, you can get nice things there in the 'normal' sized department) target, old navy, and my new favourite H&M.

Abunaimah, if you are at an in between phase in your weight loss, you could try charity shops for clothing. Charity shops, in posh areas like Wimbledon Village, Kensington, Chelsea etc., have the most amazing good quality clothes, for very little money. I'm dressing head to to in Oxfam finds, some of them never even worn. You can give them your old clothing too - I'm sure they'd be very grateful.

Congrats on the great weight loss, and I am enjoying the weather here in London today too (it's been a such a long cold spring!)

I have actually done this recently myself.  It is hard to let go of some of my favourite stuff, and yeah, some of it was pretty expensive, and can't be replaced.  But overall it feels good to let it go.  Plus I'm moving soon, so getting rid of that extra stuff means less to move!

Look at it this way - if you give it to the thrift store, somebody who can't afford to buy brand new stuff will be absolutely THRILLED to get it. I look at the thrift store as a clothing exchange - I give them the stuff that's too big for me now, and in return I get stuff that's the right size at a price I can afford. If everyone gives them clothes in good condition, then there'll be plenty of good stuff there for you to buy yourself! It's not like it comes with a big tag on the front that says 'hey, I'm from a THRIFT STORE!'

Hi,

I actually bring my better pieces of clothing to a consignment store and sell them through the store and then when I have money through that store I buy consigned clothes in a smaller size there.

I have been doing this while I have been going through my various sizes.

The things that I don't believe I can sell I give to GoodWill.

Thanks.

I have lost over 40 lbs and just weeded out my closet for the second time last week. My mom and I are on this weight loss journey together, and I am losing a little bit faster than her. So whenever something gets too baggy for me, she's in the stage where it's just right on her. It's a good strategy we have.. but pretty soon, I won't have anymore to give away and we will both have to do some shopping.

Although, I did keep one pair of pants that I pretty much lived in when I was bigger (the only jeans that fit at the time..) just for comparison. Sometimes when I get discouraged, I put them on and it feels good to see them just slide off my hips.

i haven't got a lot of money at the moment so i can't give as much as i'd like to charity. therefore anything that doesn't fit i take to the charity shop and i feel really good about it. (and it isn't just feeling good about less afluenent people being able to buy your expensive cast offs - !!! - it is the money the charity makes from selling the clothes that is the point).

most of my clothes are too small for me tho - they're my younger sister's cast offs from when she moved abroad and couldn't take everything with her. she is quite a bit smaller than me so i'm trying to lose a little more weight so I can fit in them seeing as i can't afford much new stuff at the moment! i have one skirt that i just can't wait to fit in to - it is my mission to fit in that skirt!!
