| Office + Cube + Sitting on your toosh all day | ||

I started my first office job out of college this past August, and I've probably gained about 10 pounds. I joined a gym, and am starting to use this website to help me lose the extra pounds), but it just amazes me. I'm going on an business trip next week for 8 days, and it will be the same catered meals everyday. I feel like I'm going to have to pick apart everything I am offered just to keep the calories away. Luckily, the hotel I'm staying at has a gym.. I'm going to try to hit up the cardio, but I'm still concerned about it. Any helpful tips/hints? Any other frustrated cube workers out there? :) Just wanted to rant. |

Offices are hotbeds of weight gain activity. The last place I worked was awful. We all gained 10lbs within months of starting there. |

I so hear you! I personally have an office, so at about 3, or whenever I'm feeling restless, I get up, shut my door and do jumping jacks, push-ups, crunches, etc. It feels great to get the blood moving again! A coworker and I also walk around the building a few times over our lunch break. Also, I've learned you can't just eat breakfast and lunch, you need to eat healthy snacks every couple of hours to keep your metabolism going. |

Original Post by scarr1128: Haha, me too! Sometimes I feel silly bringing in so much food. I think I may buy a mini fridge so I can stock up and not have to spend so much time packing up food. |

I've been doing that recently... eating smaller meals and packing snacks like baby carrotts, cherry tomatoes, low fat granola, apples, mango, oatmeal, etc etc. actually, any other snack ideas? i've also been cutting back on the coffee too. |

i'm lucky enough to work in a very nice office that likes to make their employees very comfortable. that means tons of food. TONS of it. we have catered lunches 4 days a week. some days, it's salad bar, or soup and sandwiches, but some days in bbq or thai or pf changs. there are ALWAYS desserts. we also have tons of stuff (cookies, chips, crackers, cereals) stocked in the cabinets, and everywhere around the office.
luckily there are also healthy choices, like fruit, veggies, oatmeal, nuts, yogurt, salads etc. i haven't gained any weight at all from working here. i'm aware that your office probably doesn't provide the heathy stuff as well as the junk, but that's where you need to take control and bring in your own stuff. cakes, cookies and all that at work are treats if they are there once in a while, but when it's three times a week it's not a treat any more, it's part of your diet! not good! if you know there's pizza in the kitchen, and that you're gonna crave it, just stay away! same goes for the other stuff! it's tough, but it's doable, and worth it. |

Original Post by ohmeganashley: I've been trying to bring in more filling snacks because baby carrots and some fruit during the day doesn't cut it. Yesterday, I brought in two hardboiled eggs, a serving size (120 calories) of cubed colby jack cheese and then the regular fruits and veggies...bring hummus for your baby carrots to make them a little more filling. An apple with peanut butter is a great, filling snack. You could also munch on some nuts during the day, too. I have a tendency to bring in two packages of instant oatmeal--one for the morning and one for an afternoon snack. |

OMG, I hear you!!!! I used to have a job in a manufacturing plant where I would be walking around all day checking on things or going out to the floor to do training..I was always moving. And although I was overweight then at 220 or so, I had a very rude awakening when I switched jobs to find myself NOT moving around so much. Working at the computer and no need to go up stairs or go out to the floor. THAT little change right there without changing how I ate packed on 15-20 lbs in about 4-5 months, it was awful!!! Then, I got a job that required me to travel and stay in hotels and eat out all the time and packed on another 15-20 lbs. It was at that high weight point of 260 just this past January that made me realize I had to change someting, thus now I'm here. I'm still struggling though with food choices. At my office, I have my own office with a door to shut. Not that I'm consistent about it, but I do have a set of 5 lb weights in the office and a stretch band attached to a hook behind the door and when I am on 2 hour conference calls on mute, I often do squats or use the weights on a little routine. I am thinking about bringing a big Ball to sit on and do situps, it would fit in the corner behind the desk just fine. I highly recommend going for walks with coworkers. Why don't you form a small walking club? Anyway, good luck!!! |

Ouch! I can only imagine. Good luck trying to keep the calories (and the pounds) away! Very rarely do I appreciate the fact that I'm a minior and can only work in active retail jobs, but this is definitely one of those times. |

Taking healthy snacks to the office has been a challenge... I don't carry those big huge bags around, just a regular size purse. I finally hit on the perfect solution-- raw almonds. Healthy, totally non-messy, full of energy, and they don't take up much space. I can easily fit as much into my purse as I could possibly snack on in a working day. What is it with workplace vending machines that never provide anything but gross junk food? I won't go near any of that-- would it kill them to stock it with something healthy for a change? |

Ah this morning we had an early meeting and somebody brought in two boxes of donuts which sat in the middle of the table. The donuts have been haunting me all day because now they're in the coffee room begging to be eaten. Luckily I was able to opt with a banana instead. |
