Helping my mum, please help? fruitcake88
  May 08 2008 22:32

I was talking to my mum this evening and she has decided to really try and lose some weight, shes tried before and has given it up.. But this time she wants to really lose some weight and I wonder if theres any good information I can give her? She's not very internet wise so she wouldnt use the internet, so I want to get the information for her to read.

She is around 5'5"/6" and is obese for her height (don't know the exact weight, she didnt let on but shes a size 22) shes 42 and leads a sedentary lifestyle. I'd like to get good explanatory information for her to read on:

  • Healthy foods
  • Low Calorie snacks
  • Staying within your calorie range
  • Eating enough calories for your body to function without going into starvation mode and without overeating
  • Eating little meals during the day to keep your body going
  • Home exercises/Light exercises

And any other information you think could be useful for her as she really doesnt have any information as she seems to think that eating a slice of toast in the morning and a rice cake for dinner is plenty for her to live on a day!!!!! Yell

low calorie snacks:

cut up apples
banana's
rice cakes
strawberries
slimfast optimum bars

healthy foods:

nothing greasy,
greens are good
corn, peas, carotts
potatoes,
fresh grown foods are good,
but you have to have some sort of protein.

trying to stay within your calorie range can be difficult, but it doesnt have to be. as long as your not taking huge portions of food, or high calorie foods, you should be fine.

one thing you dont want to do is undereat. when you undereat, your body will go into starvation mode, so when you do eat your body will take the food you do eat and turn into fat to keep you warm/protect your organs. and then when you try to get better, and eat more, your stomach will swell up so you will appear pregnant, because of the accumulating fat in that area. not to mention your body NEEDS food to survive. if you undereat, your heart and organs will get weaker, your skin will dry out, and overall you will be very unhappy with life.

a good way to lose weight is not having huge meals. most people will have breakfast, lunch, dinner. and since theres only 3 meals, they tend to eat alot at them. well no, thats how you gain weight. if have 4-7 small meals during the day + healthy snacks, your body wont go into starvation mode, and it will keep your metabolism up.

home exercises can be boring if you dont have a good routine. you can either get a workout video off of the computer, or go and buy one at zellers. there easy to do, and you can do them at your convience + they're pretty cheap. doing sit ups will strengthen your ab muscles, but wont necissarily make you lose weight. also when doing sit ups, make sure to not do them all one way, or your muscle will only grow in that one spot. CARDIO is a really really good workout. even if your just going for an hour long walk, or maybe a run, or even taking the dog for a walk, cardio is very important. i also found that hula hooping really helps. there was a lady on the news who hula hooped for a certain amount of time a day, and she close to 200 lbs.

just remember :
undereating = actually gaining weight.

Suggestions:

Set attainable goals: It's very difficult for anyone to change everything at once. Unfortunately that's what a lot of people trying to loose weight do. We set a date and say "okay no more junk food from today onwards, I am now going to exercise everyday, and I'm going to drink my 3L of water everyday" This is a great way to fail. You overwhelm yourself and get burnt out and frustrated with all the work your doing and how slow the results aren't coming then you crash, you eat all the stuff you've been denying yourself.... uh, you get the idea.

So sit down and talk with your mum about the variety of things she can do to loose weight.

Choosing better foods

Exercising

Drinking More Water

Eating healthier (which includes eating enough all the time not eating too little sometimes and too much other times)

Working on self esteem

Understanding What and What motivates her to want to loose.

Then ask her to prioritize what areas she thinks are the most important and which ones she think she can achieve the most on. These may be different priorities.

Now, you do seem to be internet savvy so once you have an area to work on,  you come on here and print off the research for her.

Take one area at a time adding slowly so she doesn't feel like it is "work". Try to keep it fun and natural.

Good luck.

I always recommend this website to people.  8 Tips For Eating Well

There are lots of simple, practical tips to improve your diet and some really good information about nutrition.  (And why a slice of toast and a rice-cake isn't enough!) Someone like your mum that is very overweight will lose weight just by improving their diet.  If she changes to healthier food just 80-90% of the time and if she has three meals a day her weight will come down without counting calories.  I wouldn't even recommend she starts counting calories (which is a pain in the rear-end, frankly) until she's got into a regular healthy-eating habit.   I'm sure you could print out some relevant sections.

Daily exercise is important and not just for her weight.  A pedometer is a good way to start and they don't cost much.  If she logs her daily step count and it's, say, 5000 then she can try to hit 6000 the next day, 7000 the next and so on up to 10,000 steps a day.   It's difficult to 'potter' your way to 10,000 steps so you have to make a conscious effort to go for a walk.  Many doctors are finding pedometers are much more effective than asking people who've never been near a gym to start pulling on lycra!

Best of luck

Thank you Gi-Jane that website is really useful... I just need to get it through to her that a slice of toast and a rice-cake ISNT ENOUGH!! When she told me thats what she'd been eating for the past 2 weeks I was like WHAT?!! and she said "oh, is that too much?"... I was like "Too much?! More than its too little!!" and i went into telling her that her body needs 1200 just for her organs to survive... Think i got a bit through to her but shes like me, when I started my diets in the past i didnt know where the hell to begin and just gave up as one website said this and another said that.. But after being here for around 3 weeks i have learnt SO much which has completely changed the way i think about food and my health.. And i hope to get this information across to my mum so it helps her lead a more healthy lifestyle. Thank you.
