Just wondering whether you have a special diet that helps. I was told to go off wheat and dairy, which does work, but is SO difficult. Also, I think that my body has a natural need for carbs (i mean more so than normal).

Or pills?

Any ideas?

I've had psoriasis for 30 years and I've never noticed a correlation between diet and flare ups but I know everyone is different.  I have had sucess with some medicines though.

Hubby gets some pretty bad eczema, I never thought about whether there was a diet connection.  Basically we just use oatmeal body wash, lotions, and bandaids.  Lots of bandaids sometimes :/  But since he's dieting with me (by proxy - he eats what I eat, and if I eat healthy, well...), I'll have to remember to keep an eye out and see if he's getting better because of it :)

I have eczema but I've never noticed a correlation between it and my diet. The type of soap I use, lotions, even fabrics can irritate it and cause a flare-up. Let me know if you figure anything out though, cuz it'd be nice to find a more reliable way to control it.

ive got terrible eczema...i use triamcialone ointment..i know thats not spelled right....dieting/being smaller hasn't helped an ounce...same with the asthma and allergies...

Just to add, I haven't found a correlation between weight and/or fitness with the psoriasis either.  Stress does cause flare ups but it's more physical stresses like not enough sleep or running a fever than it is emotional stresses.

I have eczema but I just use prescribed cream to put on it daily 3x. I never have thought about it changing my diet, maybe that is something to do with food allergies for you?

Don't know. My doctor never told me anything about my diet, just to use Eucerin lotion, and it does help, sometimes. I find it flares up a lot in the summer when it's hot. I know that things like omega 3 fats are good for your skin and hair, maybe more good fat would be beneficial for that reason?

ps linny, we're definitely twins. Just sayin'.

YES YES YES!!! There is a diet connection for eczema!! (Not sure about psoriasis though)  Let me guess, you are probably blood type A?? People that are blood type A are usually sensitive to WHEAT/GLUTEN, because they do not possess the digestive enzyme to break down the wheat. Or you may just be sensitive to wheat in general.

Eczema I know for a fact is caused by a wheat/gluten allergy. If you stop eating things with wheat/white flour in it, which basically means just about everything unfortunately, your eczema WILL go away. It takes a couple of weeks of not eating wheat/white flour to see a change. Also, if you apply Caladryl which is for poison oak or chicken pox, this works really well on eczema it will clear it up even faster.

I "have" eczema, but I control it by not eating ANYTHING with wheat/flour in it.

Which means rice or spelt breads, rice pasta, your local grocery store or health food store should have a section dedicated to gluten and wheat free products. You can use rice flour in place of regular flour for baking.

Good Luck!

I have eczema that flares when I am under stress or during times of seasonal allergies. I have it kept completely under control by using either Burt's Bees Vitamin E Body and Bath Oil or Aura Cacia Sweet Almond Oil which also has vitamin E. I use the oils right after the shower. They soak in quickly and leave my skin feeling great. During the winter I also use Cetaphil cream after the oil if I need any extra moisturizing. I can't use any lotions, they contain alcohols that also cause eczema outbreaks for me. I haven't had to use the Triamcinolone in years ever since I started using the oils.

Hey.  I saw your post and wanted to send you a link of a product my dad raves about.  It's an item for sale and might not be allowed for me to post, but I'll tell you anyway.

It's called Detente and people have raved that it reduces/relieves their skin problems such as eczema and psoriasis.  Funny, but without FDA approval, they can't say it "cures" because according to the government, only an item that is FDA approved can "cure" ... (IMHO.. I think that's political, beaurocratic garbage... ) (who has $10mil to spend on FDA testing?)

Anyway, the product is a Vitamin E derivative that helps the body create it's OWN defense to skin problems.

They were offering free samples, but they went through all of their 2 oz bottles.

Check it out, if you want:

I have had chronic stomach issues and exema for years (i worked in accounting...figured it was too much coffee in a cubicle) but cut out wheat, oats, barley, and rye (good bye beer and bourbon) for 5 months now and i can't believe i was miserable for so long.  I just got used to it.  No more weird steroid based creams in weird places.  Just be aware, even with just wheat...it's in twizzlers, it's in soy sauce...it really is everywhere.

I have chronic excema, along with all the females in my family.  The only thing that has EVER helped me was a course of steriod tablets.  I had previously been prescribed steriod ointments, but since I had it around my eyes, I had to discontinue it.  I have tried EVERYTHING!!  Another thing that helps quite a bit-believe it or not-is tanning.  I was told by a dermatologist to tan 2 times a week & it would keep it at bay & it does (When I tan).

I have psoriasis, almost all on my scalp.  My dermatologist said that psoriasis has been shown to correlate with overweight and high cholesterol, but that losing weight is no guarantee of the psoriasis clearing up.

I use coal tar shampoo 3 times a week - It helps a lot, especially with the itching.

#15 davefiredancer19 May 10 2008 18:51

sorry to burst some of yalls bubbles, but when I did the low carb thing (little to no wheat, etc) the ezcema did NOT go away...for me its hereditary and allergy (as in fur, environment, pollen, etc) related...sorry.

I dont think my blood type is A though :D

I dont have any of those problems but my father has psoriasis.  He uses creams and also salt water does wonders. He looooves goig in the ocean because it soothes the patches on his skin and also makes them fade a bit..good thing summer is coming!

He also uses tar shampoo on his head for the patches that are under his hair.. he manages it pretty well..just have to be diligent. Oh, and he doesnt have a special diet..but maybe that will work?
