If you eat late can you still lose weight? nikkihmr

Hi, I am new to the site, and I have been watching what I eat and exersizing, but when I get home from work my husband insists that we eat dinner at 9:30 or 10 at night. I am wondering is this hindering my weightloss or is it all in my head that it is a bad thing? Please let me know what you think. THanks!

When you eat doesn't matter, how much you eat does.

I work really late hours. Generally i don't get home till 9, and then first go running and then need to make dinner so its not at all weird for me to have dinner at 10:30.. i have been losing weight so i guess its fine. i find it actually helps me not binge at night because after dinner i'm too full to eat anything else.

i will argue that when you eat does matter!

when you eat at night all of that food stays on your body because you dont use those calories as energy if you go to sleep shortyl after. plus- when you sleep your metabolism slows down so that food is not getting burned at all. when i stopped eating at night i saw weight loss very quickly, i broke a three week plateau.

try to at least eat something light if you are going to eat that late.

I have the same problem as you, and i did some research and found out that if you're trying to loose weight you should have dinner around two hours before going to sleep, so as long as you sleep around two hours after eating dinner, it doesnt matter at what time you eat.

I was always told it is bad to eat late, that is why I ask. I usually eat lunch around 1 or so in the afternoon, and then like I said I don't eat til 9 or so. For me that is a long time to go without eating. My husband and I cannot agree on a time. I unfortunately in the past have turned to snacks to tide me over. I just don't know what to do.

yes, you can still lose weight. Absolutely. It's just sort of deceiving if you weigh in in the morning because your food's sort of still there haha.
Like, I'm a huge nighttime eater, & I've found that when I wake up early for school, I weigh more than I actually do. However, I sleep in on Saturdays, so that's when I record my weight, after I've slept longer & more time has passed since that late night snacking. So the weight's still coming off, you just have to search a little more to find it on the scale =]

Starcrossdlovex is right!! It is only your morning weigh-in that will be affected. Your long-term weight loss will be the same. The calories in - calories out rule is the same.

preferably you should eat 3 hours before you go to bed... you need to give your body some time to digest the food, instead of letting it sit in your stomach all night which isn't very comfortable

you can eat late... but it really depends on what you eat, and how much

you shouldn't eat a meal more then about 300cal.. it puts too much stress on your body when your metabolism is slowing down and preparing for rest

you should also avoid eating lots of carbs... carbs give you energy, making sleep harder

yes, calories in calories out... but I think there are some exceptions to this (ie your metabolism starts slowing at night, proteins and complex carbs use more energy to digest then simple ones... etc.)

I don't remember how I know this: but when Sumo Wrestlers are trying to gain weight, they eat one large meal and then sleep right afterwards, so that the body does not have a chance to burn it off

obviously one night of late eating will not effect you long term... but I wouldnt let it happen very often

my nutrionest told me to eat a snack after dinner which is usually around 9. ive been losing weight. remember tho this is a snack not meal but i dont see why a healthy meal would hurt as long as you dont lay down right after. my nutrionest knows best!

if i work out during the day i always need another meal about a half hr before i go to bed or i cannot sleep,  i usually have something healthy little fat around 250 cals, if i postpone it i will wake up in the night hungry or never fall asleep and only obsess,  i learned to eat when i was hungry, it sucks not eating with my boyfriend and putting his meals in the micro, but its better to listen to your body and give it what it needs when,

like today i made us 2 small pancakes and a large banana apple yogurt orange salad....i was hungry 2 hrs later so i made soup and toasts,  and we have to eat an early dinner tonight so i will make sal with tuna fish and cz bread and all this because tonight is my birthday party and we both want to be able to eat snacks and drink wine,
sometimes its all about the planning!
