Alfalfa Sprouts c_jamie

I've only ever eaten these at the Make-Your-Own-Wrap or a bit on top of salads... and I like them!

But the grocery store requires you to buy a big thick dense container of them.
They seem pretty nutritious too... or is there something I dont know about them (dont know much about them...but I figure its a veggie, how bad can they be!)

Do they need to be rinsed/washed prior to eating from the container? It doesnt look like the wrap store I go to washes them... :P

How long do these last in the fridge?

And how else can I use them?? Has anyone tried adding them to pasta or noodles w/ broth...?

I like them too, and put them in or on anything you would put lettuce. They are very easy to make yourself on a window sill and take up little space. All you need is a package of seed(lasts a long time) Health aisle at grocery store or Health store. A clean mason jar or clean recycled mayo jar. A bit of screen cut to fit the top and just the metal ring of the mason jar. Thrift stores have the jars and rings for pennies. 1 tablespoon of seed in the jar. Fill jar with water, invert and strain out once a day. They start to sprout in just a few days and at the end of a week you have a full jar of sprouts. A lot cheaper than buying store bought  and you have control over the process.

If you are buying them grown, you want to be sure they seller keeps them cool before purchase and that you refridgerate them after.

Rinsing them can remove possible dirt.

The sites online say they can be kept in the fridge up to 3 days.

they're yummy and good for you, jamie, but if at all possible, you should grow your own.  they're notorious for salmonella.

I like them as a salad w/some nuts and berries :)

it's never a bad idea to wash any produce you get from the store :)

I love those little guys!  I have found they keep about a week though.  You will know-either they become soggy or dry as a weed.  I always smell mine too before I buy them in the store...if they smell "off" they are.

Where can you buy alfalfa seeds? I have found them online but Miss Impatient wants to get the stuff and start the growing process THIS WEEKEND!!!
