Well, I'm not in the 300's anymore (thankfully) -- in June I started out at 319lbs, as of yesterday I'm down to 260lbs. So I've lost nearly 60lbs since then. I eat an average of 1829 calorie per day, I cycle my calories: Sun: 1800 Mon: 2000 Tue: 1400 Wed: 2800 Thu: 1200 Fri: 1500 Sat: 2100 I also take a free day in place of the 2800 cal day every 2 weeks and get right back to normal the next day. I do cardio and strength training 3 or 4 days a week, sometimes less. As I lose more weight I plan to increase my cardio/activity but I am NOT going to lower my calories. I will still eat the same amount and take it slower. I believe people should eat at or close to their TARGET weight maintenance calories, get plenty of exercise, and eventually, gradually, they will get to where they want to be. I love my diet. I eat everything that I like in moderation. Deprivation and restrition lead to failure and bineging -- that's why I don't try to lose in a way that I can't live with anymore. I plan to stay on this for the rest of my life because I REALLY enjoy it and don't feel deprived at all. I enjoy myself at holidays and special occasions; I don't count calories on those days or worry about them. It's all part of life and I am happy and healthier than ever before! |

I started at 372, with a BMI of 56.6. I am at 312.6, with a BMI of 47.4. (I've lost 15% of my starting weight!) My next big goal is 299 (below 300!!!), with a BMI of 45.5. Then my next big goal is 269 (loss of 100 pounds), with a BMI of 40.9 Goal after that? 250, with a BMI of 38. Finally? 210, with a BMI of 31.9. (That will be a total weight loss of 159 pounds). * * * I am trying hard to stay encouraged, but my weight loss seems to be stalling/slowing, and that can be very disappointing and heartbreaking. But, my health really demands that I get below 300, so I am just plugging away at these next 13 pounds or so. I am trying to take things one meal at a time, one day at a time, one pound at a time! =^..^= MOLLY |

Original Post by j3nn_dot_net: I am eating 1500 calories per day, a current deficit of 1000 calories per day. I average about 10 servings of veggies a day, 45-50g of fiber, and around 50% carbs/35% protein/15% healthy fats. Most of my calories are spread throughout the day in four different "meals" ... to maintain proper blood sugar levels (I am diabetic and take insulin as well as oral medications.) I watch my sodium, avoid caffeine and sugar, strive to eat organic where possible, and I take a number of vitamins and supplements in addition to an impressive array of prescription medications, including insulin. I test my blood sugar 4-6 times per day. In addition to diabetes, I am seeking to control high cholesterol, high triglycerides, high blood pressure, severe asthma, and diabetic neuropathy (which means I get severe muscle pain/burning/tingling in my feet, legs, arms and hands.) I am 42 years old, married, and I am in my 16th week of dieting. I've lost 15% of my starting weight so far ... about 55 pounds. (Average weight loss ... 3.5 pounds per week for the first 16 weeks.) My wonderful DH is over-the-top supportive in all aspects of this journey, and keeps cheerfully buying me things (new clothes, a new bike, a nifty treadmill) to keep me motivated. For health reasons, my exercise right now is minimal (until I can get cardiac clearance.... and I need to lose 13-15 more pounds to get re-evaluated.) (But I did burn 100 calories on the treadmill this afternoon, walking... I am trying to do this every other day or so, just to keep moving.) =^..^= MOLLY |

Original Post by proud_mom_of_2: Wow. I just don't think I could do a VLCD (very low calorie diet) again. I tried it once years ago, most of my hair fell out, and I ended up just regaining all my weight... and then some. This time, my goal is to learn about nutrition and to embrace a forever lifestyle. How long will you stay on the 5 cups of food per day? How often does your doctor see you? Do you take lots of vitamins and supplements? =^..^= MOLLY |

| 46 year old male in sunny tucson az, peaked at 324 back in march. started out on weight watchers online and then found this site, played with both for a while, and have now been using this site exclusively for about 2 months now. i'm stuck hard at 250 right now, i think it's a combo of boredom with my foods, and a love of dark heavy beer thats causing me the problems right now. I ride a mountain bike on trails near my house 13 miles, 4 to 5 days a week and I'm going to get a weight bench/set for christmas so my upper body can start catching up with my lower body :) I'm eating 2000 to 2500 cals a day depending on whether i ride or not and am shooting for 200 pounds. i'm 5' 11" height weight charts show me around 175-180, i'll re-evaluate when I get to 200. Decided today to cut the beer out of the diet for a month and see what happens, the bike riding regimen is too much work to literally piss away. | ||

Hi Trainwreck,
I started at 406 and hit 327 this week for a loss of 79 pounds in 4 months and one week. The most I will accept weight wise long term is 225, I'd like to be about 180 but I'm not sure I can do that. I've been lax about the gym for the last two weeks only going 2 times instead of the 3-5 times. I've discovered I have a social life again and tend to let going out and staying out late get in the way of excercise. I normally keep the calories in the 1500 range. My weight is excessive and my approach is a little on the drastic side but it is the less of two evils for me. I'd really like to get enough weight off that I can go biking again like long ago. Skydiving would be fun and I think I'll do that when I get to 250 as a reward. |

Original Post by mollymouser: I go back to the doctor that put me on that December 12th. I am hoping that is the end of it. I am trying to make sure I get at least 1200 calories per day, but that is still 1400+ deficit with no exercise. No vitamins or supplements. He sees me monthly. If my hair starts to fall out, I'm done. But it does scare me that I will gain the weight back b/c of doing very low calorie and the pills to lose it. However, if I gain better eating habits, portion control, learn to count calories, etc........then would I still gain just b/c I up my calories or stopped taking the pills? |

I started at 406 in February and am now at 281. I started on a firm 1200 cal per day diet with walking as my primary exercise, usually for 60-90 minutes a day, sometimes more and Bowflex 3 times a week. I eat more now, (@1800 calories) because it's winter and my health stats (bp, pulse, etc.) are in such good shape that there is no longer a serious rush to get the lbs off so I'm losing 3-4 lb a week now. I still walk around 60 min a day and do weights 3 times a week. Over time I've upped the amount of resistance and increased the number of exercises, so it's fun to go back and look at my old charts and see how far I've come in that way too. The best thing is that over time I've learned to not obsess as much about portions and such. I can eyeball most things I eat to get the right portion and I know that in most cases, a fun sized candy bar won't kill me. This has made it so the diet part of my life can sink back into the background and not be the main goal of my life. I do log my food, especially if I've noticed a gain (like when I had my broken foot and couldn't walk for exercise) I weigh in every Saturday and that keeps me honest so if I see the scale not moving in the right direction, I can adjust my plan. That was the mistake I made with the broken foot is I didn't weigh in during that period. |

Wow, thanks for this post! I peaked this year at 406 lbs. It was a shock for me, and one that had been a long time in coming! I've been significantly overweight since I was 15, I'm 27 now. I've avoided seeing my health and lifestyle deteriorate because I didn't think there was anything I could do about it.
When I weighed in at 406 in July of this year, I basically begged my doctor to help me. He put me on phentermine-short term- to jump start my weight loss. I started working out daily, sometimes twice a day, doing the elliptical machine and weights at my gym, and then swimming laps in my pool at night. It's been 20 weeks and I've lost 60lbs, so now I weigh 346. I'm shooting for 330 by the end of the month and hope to under 300 (for the first time in more than 8 years) by the end of February. I am no longer on the phentermine and thankfully, going it alone hasn't been as hard as I thought it would be. I used the drug as a jump start and it worked and now I have the knowledge and motivation to press forward on my own. Good luck! Everyone who has responded to this post has motivated me even more. So thanks for the pick me up! |

Original Post by proud_mom_of_2:Original Post by mollymouser: At a minimum, may I suggest a good multivitamin? It's just a good idea, especially if you are not eating the variety of vegetables/foods needed to get all of your nutrients every day. You might also consider a calcium supplement, too. And, if your cholesterol or triglycerides are high, an Omega 3 (fish oil pill) may also be worth looking into. Wow... a 1400 calorie deficit? My endocrinologist/primary care physician/dietician would only let me have a 1200 calorie deficit for 4 weeks as a jump-start, and then insisted on no more than a 1000-calorie daily deficit (or less). And I had to monitor my blood sugar levels, heart rate, blood pressure, weight -- daily for those first 4 weeks and call it in to them once a week on Monday mornings. I have to say that I've been pretty happy at 1500 calories a day ... spread out over the day in "calorie budgeted" meals ... with a big emphasis on fresh veggies. I keep my carbs at 50% of my total calories, lean protein at 35%, and fats at about 15%.... and this has really helped my blood sugars and cholesterol to come down (slowly but surely.) And this site has some excellent suggestions for eating 1500 calories a day! 1500 calories a day gives me enough "wiggle room" to eat out once in a while, and to enjoy some healthy treats that otherwise I would have to avoid. Plus, it lets me eat peanut butter!!! =^..^= MOLLY |

Wow - this thread is inspiring and depressing at the same time! Inspiring, because you all have done so well, and depressing, because my loss seems to have stalled and I am getting discouraged! I started in April 07 at 343 and am now at 280. I hit 280 at the end of October, and I am still here! This past week I have been slacking off some, but before that I was doing all the same things with no results. I am getting back on track after finals, nothing to do but keep on.

Welcome, Denise. Maybe you might try switching up what/how you eat? Like going low carb for 2 weeks? Are you exercising? If so, maybe you could stop for a week or two, then re-start? =^..^= MOLLY |

Thanks Molly - funny you should say that. I have not exercised for the past week due to late night study nights, finishing assignments, etc... I had to choose between exercise and sleep and there is not a lot of choice there, but before that I was exercising about 5 days/week so I have inadvertently given myself a break from that. I was also eating more during this past week, and as far as I can tell I have maintained my weight. So maybe now when I get back on track I will lose again.. crossing fingers, and back to the gym today! |
