Birth Control = Weight Gain? sehmicor
  Aug 17 2007 00:56
So my sister warned me that when she started using a contraceptive pill she gained weight due to appetite increase (and water retention).  I am going to be starting the patch tomorrow which has more estrogin than the pills, and my doctor warned me that I may have some weight gain due to water retention but it shouldn't be too much.

So what I'm wondering is, have any of you had experience with this?  And what can I do to prevent (very much, if any) weight gain?  I just started dieting recently so I don't have the will power to be very hardcore and eat completely healthy or anything, and I'm just looking for osme advice.

Any commments appreciated,

Sarah

I went on seasonale and didn't gain a pound! my gyno assured me that any weight gained would not be because of the pill. she said they have done studies and found no link between birth control and weight gain.

the only one I think causes weight gain is the shot. one of my friends gets it for birth control, and she gained like 10 lbs. (although she is stick thin so it doesn't matter)

hope I helped some!

Well I used this pill called APRI and it didnt make me gain weight at all, in fact I lost 38 lbs on it. Then I switched to Nuvaring because the pill caused MASSIVE MIGRAINES! Well lets just say I havent lost 1 pound in 13 weeks. I stopped the Nuvaring only after I realized it wasnt a freakin plateau that I hit it was the birthcontrol that was halting my weightloss. So now I am birthcontrol free, FOREVER!

FYI: I used the patch for about a year and it caused a little weight gain(5-10lbs) which I lost later. I hated the patch: cant take a bath cuz it will lose its stickiness, leaves a mark where it has been, caused weird bleeding. Did you know that it also cause major bloodclots? My DOC refused to prescribe it to me because of this new study they did on it.

Goodluck,

Kristine

Yes I know my doctor told me it may cause bloodclots, and that migraines and leg pains could have to do with that.  I don't take baths I showe so I'm okay there. :)  And the adhesive stickyness is okay because i have wipes to get rid of it.  My doctor didn't want to perscribe it to me but I told him I am very forgetful and I would proabbly forget to take the pill (which would make using it as a contraceptive a very bad idea).

So I really can't take the pill because I would forget, I know this because when I had cancer I would forget to take the antibiotics and steroids I was supposed to (unless my mother reminded me haha)

christinalauren - Thanks for your input. :)  Hopefully it doesn't affect me too much, but it is higher levels of horomones than the pill so probably. :(

I am on the birth control shot, Depo Pro vera.  I did gain almost 10 pounds in the first year I was on it, but it was 100% due to appetite increase. I think it depends on the type and amount of hormone you are on for the birth control, and it is really just if you eat more (as a result of cravings) that will lead to weight gain or not. I ate like crap because that's what I craved - on top of eating more total calories. and not exercising so a real bad combo  I have since started to eat better and am having no problem dropping some of the weight and I'm still on the birth control.  So I would say maybe keep track of what you eat and see if you feel like you're starting to crave or eat more and try to stay on top of it. Plenty of women don't gain weight on the pill.  Good luck!

reenbean that is awesome news then.  Since i have been keeping track of how much I eat I should be okay.  :)  Thanks for the info on your experience. <3

amg76 - Thanks much for your info as well. :)

I have been taking the patch for 4 months now, and I have been steadly losing weight.  Personally, I think it's great.  I also eat well (1300-1500 cals) and workout.  At the same time, I think it really comes down to how your body will react to the patch.  I think the majority of women don't have issues with it, but if you do, switch to something else!

About the patch:  I am not saying this to offend anyone, please don't be.  This is a weight loss/information site, and this is topic is about birth control and the subject about the patch has been mentioned.  I think this info is being relayed by doctors more now since it has come up, but it was not relayed to me by my doc in the 2 years I wore the patch until after I had my baby and asked to go back on it and my OB looked at me really funny and said, "Well, I can put you on it, but you do know that it is not proven effective in patients over 190 pounds and has been shown to fail."  I'm sitting there at 260!  No, I did not know that.  The doctor who prescribed it for me (at the same weight) didn't bother mentioning this.  In all fairness, it was brand new when I was put on it, so maybe she really didn't know.  Anyway, I don't know anyone's weight here, and this is not meant to be offensive, only to inform anyone who is on it or may be considering it.  It is in teeny, tiny little print in the prescribing info.  If you are over 190, it can fail, with perfect use.  With this new info, I chose Yasmin and have been very, very pleased with that decision so far.  (I had the nasty little residual sticky goopiness problem with the patch, too!)

I used Nuvaring for over a year with no side effects.  If you can, talk to your doctor about it.  Its as good as they say.

My doctor told me that the combined pill, tends not to work as effictivly if the person is over 160 pounds. So she put me on a progestreon only pill, called cerazette. i was 186 pounds when i went on the pill, and due to the doctor telling me i had a problem with my weight, im currently down to 163 :)

i've been an orthotricyclen for less than a year, and at the start of taking it, i definitely noticed that i was hungry all the time. my gyno did tell me that a rise in my appetite was a possibility. i only noticed that i had gained about a pound or two, and it seemed to be water weight, so i just started snacking on veggies when i felt those hunger pangs, and i'm fine now.
