| Panera Choices! | ||

| HELP! I recently got hired for the summer at Panera Bread Bakery/Restaurant (if you've heard or been to it, please help!) So this means I work approximately 6 hour shifts with a break midway, of which I will need to eat a meal. This is the case for 4 days, since I am already there and my break will be quite short, I will most likely be eatting the food at Paneras (also I have a 65% discount). BUTTTTTTTTTT I don't know what to get! I have looked at the nutritional guide onlone (http://pdfdownload.tsone.info/pdf2html.php?url=http://www.p anera.com/pdf/nutr-guide.pdf) buttttt I dont know whats healthy. I know everything has no transfats, but the salads seem to even have just as many calories as the cafe sandwiches! help! I'm sure this is because they are drenched in dressing. What should I do. I was even thinking of bagging a lunch/dinner for the times I work and eat that (although less appealing) SUGGESTIONS on what to eat! I was thinking of just ordering one of the soups as my lunch. Low in cals and in fat (BUT LOADED IN SODIUM!), However these seem to be the lowest cal choices on the menu! HELP! WHat should i get/do?? that sodium is a killer. maybe id be best to bring my own meals? ughhh |

If you won't be snacking except for your "lunch" you don't always have to have the lowest calorie option. If you are worried about dressings, they may have a lower fat/calorie option, or,you could get your own dressing packets to use on the salads. I LOVE Panera, and it's because I feel like I actually have choices there. (although I usually always have the asian chicken salad, soup, and an apple. |

| Keep in mind that you'll be burning a couple more calories while you're at work than you would if you were sitting at home (like me...) It might not be such a bad thing to have a decent sized lunch? | ||

| im a big fan of st louis bread co.(which is panera), and went there yesterday. I got the classic caesar salad with a side of an apple. According to their nutrition guide, that is 440 calories, and IMO it is delicious and rather large. | ||

| If you eat a small breakfast, although something to fill you up, try Eggo low Fat Whole Wheat Waffles (180 cal for 2) or some oatmeal, something that will hold you over until lunch, i say go ahead and get a sandwich and/or salad. Keep in mind that as previously stated you'll be burning a few more cals while working. I would just make lunch your largest meal of the day (if this works for you). And also, just make breakfast and dinner lower in sodium, so you get the majority of it during lunch. HOpe this helps, and GOOD LUCK..I too LOVE LOVE LOVE St Louis Bread Co. (Panera) | ||

Try and eat a meal just before coming to work. I work 6-8 hour shifts at my job, and I usually just have a nutrigrain during my break.
If you must eat at Panera's, just be smart about it. The soups are a pretty safe bet, just make sure you're not getting one of the cream-based ones. The salads can be alright, but always get a half-salad with the dressing on the side, and try to avoid the croutons. If you've got to go for a sandwich, don't choose one of the premade hot sandwiches...those are loaded with cheese and mayo. Stick to one you can customize yourself, go light on the cheese and condiments, and again, get a half-sandwich instead of the full. |

| Oh man that's tuff. I love Panera!! I would bag a lunch or eat at home before coming into work... if anything you can do their salads and bring in your own fat free dressing. you can also build your own sandwich...they have whole wheat bread and turkey... no special sauces, or mayo...you can do it!! | ||

| Their chicken poppyseed/strawberry salad is awesome! I think it is about 300 calories for the whole thing--full size portion. Otherwise, they have some great low-fat, low cal soups. | ||

| Their lowfat chicken noodle soup is like 100 calories, if I recall.. and you get a side with it. I always choose the apple and bottled water. All in all, very low cal! | ||

I think Panera is wonderful if you keep in mind that you don't have to order anything as it is described on the menu. You can get a turkey sandwich, on low-carb bread if you want, without the mayo or artichoke spread or whatever else they put on there, and pile on the veggies... and then it's just a turkey sandwich like you'd make at home! Also I LOVE their french onion soup -- no croutons no cheese and it's 80 cal/cup. Low fat chicken noodle soup is great too, and I've never tried but I've heard wonderful things about the veggie black bean soup. Salads are also really good and again, modify! No feta, no nuts, no dressing (or any of the above on the side)... and then it's just veggies. Their cafe salad, no dressing, only has like 40 cal if I remember correctly. Add a sandwich, or top the salad with chicken and add a soup. Of all fast-ish food places you could've worked on a diet, Panera may be the one I'd choose... :) Edit: Forgot about the fruit cup! 70 cal I think for the small and you can get it instead of your side for an extra $1 or so. |

on their nutritional website the have the calories for each meal... for the salads are these nutritional values WITH the dressings or without? How much would you say the salmon salad is without the dressing? Todaya I got chicken noodle soup with an apple and bottled water! YUM and i was totally full ! only down side its LOADED with sodium! Dinner is usually my biggest meal so I have to stay lean with the lunches if that is the case (although I am working some dinner/night shifts there). Which is the best salad I'm thinking I agree with amora, the strawberry poppy sead, but it is LOADED with sugars! Is this bad???? Although I know they are good, fruit sugars! JUST CURIOUS ALSO, What if I'm working the late night shift, and after I have my dinner, a few hours late want a snack/treat (usually at home I have sugar free jello, or 60 cals yogurt). Is there ANYTHING reasonable in their pastries/desserts? I'm thinking I should stay away from that .. what do you think? Most of those treats are equivalent in calories to what a meal is worth calorie-wise! Opinions? I'll probably stay away. So for lunch once again stick to the soups and/or salads? Any idea how many cals the salads are without the dressing (i will bring my own or just ask for vinegar).. Although if I did use the dressings the one that comes with the strawberry/poppy is the best correct? (Although my only fear with this menu choice it has VERY FEW protein! (without the chicken) only 5g.. but with the chicken spikes up the calories QUITE A BITTTT ahhh.. its so hard) any suggestions ? You all are sooooo helpful! I'm thinking more and more its too difficult to track calories and choose the right options and Id be best just bring my own foods/lunch? Opinions? THANKS EVERYONE! I work there saturday night again! Still deciding what to do bring or order! |

| I would think with the salads/soups you could easily have some feta or a little chicken on a salad for some protein. Feta is a very reasonable cheese snce the servings are generally smaller. the black bean soup is packed with fiber! | ||

If you're working there could you customize yours? |

I used to work there for a year and have looked over the nutrition guide many times. I also go there on my break from classes every tuesday and thursday what I get usually is: chicken noodle/black bean/veggie soup depending on what I feel like. I usually get the french baguette portion with it, and eat only half of it.. That is around 200 calories, which is good because I usually eat a big dinner.. If Im starving or it's dinner time, I usually get a 1/2 chicken tomesto sandwhich on french, which is only 240 calories, and dont eat anything with it. Just some suggestions! There's a lowfat triple berry muffin in the pastries btw if you have a sweet-tooth! |
