Running Shoes - Best Brand hybrids05
  Apr 23 2007 17:11
Right now I'm trying to run at least 3 5Ks each week. I've got a pair of Nike Free running shoes that don't do much good at cushioning my feet at all! After my runs my feet ache for days, sometimes up until my next run and this makes it difficult for me to exercise.

I have a neutral arch and I don't overpronate. I really just need a basic pair of running shoes so I can do my runs each week. I'm 6'3, 170 lbs, 20 yo Male if that matters.

What shoes do you all wear and can you make any recommendations?

I really love New Balance. They have the best support for my arches.

Yeah; Men's Health magazine rated them as the best brand to buy. All of the recommendations I've heard have been towards different shoes though... The Nike Air Pegasus seems to be a pretty good shoe from what I've heard. I've also heard some good stuff about the Nike Shox...

I looked at some NBs at Footlocker and the 8505SN looks nice... But I think I should really focus on something that's going to ease my ankle pain...

Some other shoes I've heard good reviews of:
Brooks Radius 6
Brooks Glycerin 4
Asics Cumulus VII

Also, could I fix the problem by buying running socks/gel inserts?

The best running shoes are those that fit your feet the best. It's highly personal. If you don't have any pronation issues, just go to a running store and try on a whole bunch of pairs, and choose the one that is the most comfortable and within your price range.

That said, I was a long time Asics fan. They are quite popular shoes, tend to work well for most runners. The only problem with them is that they do seem to wear out a little quicker: it's like they expire exactly at 500 miles. And I had to switch to a different brand recently, because in my old age I apparently need something with a bit more cushioning.

I'm now wearing Saucony and I like them a lot except for one thing: they smell terrible, like horse dung. And the smell has not improved after three months. I have to leave them outside, they smell that bad!! Otherwise, they're great .:-)

Personally, I don't like Nike for reasons concerning how they run their business (i.e. sweatshops). But that's just me-  I won't really promote something knowing how they treat their employees.

And touching on the socks/inserts point...I need to do the same. Even with the new balance. I notice the type of socks I wear definitely affect my foot pain. I have HIGH arches, and I think it might be time to buy inserts as well. :(

Where do your feet ache, by the way?
#6 hybrids05 Apr 23 2007 18:39
On the top of my foot and around my ankles

I agree that the best brand is the best brand for you.  I cant wear nikes because it is too narrow.  I wear Pearl Zumi's but I have pretty flat feet.  I tried on a zillion shoes and even ran on a treadmill in the running store with a few of them on before I selected one that fit prefectly.

I only by Asics...  LOVE THEM!  I have the 2200...     I tried New Balance and hated them...  I can't wear Nike, my feet just don't fit in them right... but I love asics...

Mizuno all the way...my last pair was a Nike (no idea why...must have been the green that got me) and they were so terrible.  I felt like I was a ankle sprain ready to happen.

I used to play college vball and our running shoes were always Mizuno...I have worn Mizuno since I was 14. I have narrow feet so they are great for that too....

Ok so I just got back from Hibbett Sports and I splurged on a pair of shoes...

Thanks so much for all of your recommendations...

I ended up going with a pair of Asics Gel-Nymbus VIII... They were marked down from $120.00 to $79.99 and they were SOOOOOO much more comfortable than any of the Nikes/New Balances that I tried on...

So I'm pretty much in love with my new shoes... I even bought some new running socks to go with um :)

And the girl at Hibbett was extraordinarily helpful...

You're going to love the Asics.

Just one word of advice, log your mileage. If when you reach 500 miles you start having any aches and pains or injuries, suspect the shoes. They wear out a little quicker than most - even though they don't LOOK worn out. But, yeah, they are SOOO comfortable it's totally worth buying a new pair more often.

Enjoy!

sauconys!

I can go for miles and miles on the treadmill in these shoes. I haven't found a very appealing pair..they all look like older lady shoes to me but..i dont care because they allow me to work harder and longer during my workouts..they are amazing.

and i have really terrible foot problems too, high arches and all.

Hybrids: Keep us in the loop about how the Asics work out because I am definitely in the market for some new running shoes, and I am sure other people are as well. It'll be good to know how they compare to your old shoes. Thanks.

Happened upon your post -- I log anywhere from 55-75 miles a week but never, ever wear my nike free's for a single step of that running.  Free's are intended to help strengthen your feet by mimicking being barefoot; hence the reason your feet/legs ache -- it's like you're running barefoot.  Go to a running shop and ask them to help fit you with a pair of shoes that provides the correct support/stability and wear those frees around the house and when doing your weight or core training.

Ok So tonight was my night off but I decided to go for a run anyway... Let me just say that the Asics Gel-Nymbu- VIII's are like nothing I've ever worn...

I'll never run in Nikes again... I tried on 4 pair of shoes today, 2 New Balance and 2 Asics... The New Balance was comfy on my heels but they cramped my toes with every step... The 1st pair of Asics felt great but I decided to keep looking... The second pair of Asics were HIGHLY recommended by the girl that was helping me and they felt like heaven on my foot compared to my Frees... And I couldn't pass up a $40 discount...

I really wanna recommend the Asics to anyone who likes to run... Mizuno's and Brooks were pretty highly recommended by the girl helping me, too, but I was sold on the Nymbus-VIIIs

I'd just like to throw in my vote for Asics as well.  I've worn Nike's forever but will never again.  Just like hybrid, as soon as I tried them on they felt awesome.

"Also, could I fix the problem by buying running socks/gel inserts?"

Well I'm a bit late, but yeah the gel inserts I bought for my shoes made them extra cumfy for running. I haven't had a blister or foot pain or anything bad happen with my feet since swapping the insoles out with some running gel insoles.

Maybe if you need a second pair of running shoes you could do the same to your old nike shoes? That way you have some backups that won't kill your feet.

But overall you love your Asics? That may be what I look into next time I'm shopping for running shoes. Right now I'm fine, but I can imagine by the end of the summer I'll be looking for something to replace my old shoes.

I didn't read every reply, but jenmcc had it right.  There is no "best brand" there?s only the best shoe for you.  That said, you should definitely not be using the Nike free.  That is a very specialized shoe for people who what to simulate running barefoot as much as possible.  I wear them because I have years of running experience and know how to land and know what i need/ don't need as far as a running shoe.  You're going to want to go with something that has more cushioning and support.  The Nikes are all rated these days for cushioning, support, and stability, I believe.  Try going to a running specialty store instead of a footlocker or something so that you can get help from someone who can match you up with a shoe that's right for you.

I couldn't agree more, Get the shoe that fits the best for you... I have ran a few marathons and halfs and did it in all types of shoes... Bottom line I still love my Pearl Zumiiiiii's The Float... it has the best fit, comfort and design for my feet, joints, and all the above... Also what makes them so great for long distance is the inseam is not intrucive like most shoes.

A great pair of shoes will make the world of diffrence.  Replace them every 250 - 300 miles or if your really hard on them.  Get the shoe that is geared to the style of running you do.  Don't run on Nike Free's for a Half or an entire Marathon unless you can do it barefoot, if you can do that then you are ina diffrent class then average people.

I know a guy who ran on old shoes and crappy support, he did run a sub 2:35 Marathon but he can barely jog on his feet now, becasue he never changed out his shoes...
#20 nightc1 Apr 24 2007 21:01
Change every 250 to 300 miles ::shock::

Wow... that would mean for me changing shoes about every 6 months.   I guess that's not so bad  but it goes against my frugal nature (frugal, beca use i have a wife and 3 kids to support on my in come).

What about with insole changes?   Say there's plenty of tread on the old shoes and you just changed insoles until the tread was worn down?
