The Sacred Heart Memorial Hospital Soup Diet???
The Sacred Heart Memorial Hospital Soup Diet???
Has anyone ever gone on this diet? Does it work?
I'm making it right now and I'm about to start tomorrow on it. I've heard from my mom and some other people that it works. Then I read on the internet that it works but you'll gain everything back when you get off it.
Just wondering from people who have tried it. Thanks!

I haven't heard tell of this. What is it?
Sacred Heart Medical DietThis 7-day eating plan can be used as often as you like. If correctly followed, it will clean out your system of impurities and give you a feeling of well-being. After only 7 days of this process, you will begin to feel lighter by at least 10 pounds and possibly 17 pounds, and experience an abundance of energy.
SOUP:
- 1 or 2 cans of stewed tomatoes
- 3 plus large green onions
- 1 large can of beef broth (no fat)
- 1 pkg. Lipton Soup mix (chicken noodle)
- 1 bunch of celery
- 2 cans green beans
- 2 lbs. Carrots
- 2 Green Peppers
- Unsweetened juices
- Tea (also herbal)
- Coffee
- Cranberry juice
- Skim milk
- Water, water, water
it's a fad crash (unhealthy) diet and not associated at all with Sacred Heart Medical...
The Sacred Heart Diet has been called a number of different names (such as the Spokane Heart Diet, the Cleveland Clinic Diet, Sacred Heart Memorial Hospital Diet and the Miami Heart Institute Diet). The diet also bears a striking resemblance to the cabbage soup diet. (also a fad crash unhealthy diet)
This diet is not recommended
This diet is very clearly an unsustainable fad diet, but is not as nutritionally unsound as similar diets. Most of these diets claim some magical fat-burning science is involved, or that there is something special about the combination of foods. This is simply untrue - it is nothing more complex than a reduction in calories!
http://www.everydiet.org/sacred_heart_diet.ht mThe Sacred Heart Diet is a fad diet that has been circulating for many years. The diet was supposedly thought to come from the cardiology department at Sacred Heart Memorial Hospital where it was used for overweight heart patients. However, like most of these diets - this is an urban myth.

- The Sacred Heart Hospital in Montreal Canada (Hôpital Sacre Coeur) issued a press release in 2004 stating that "no nutritionist at the Hospital took part in the development of this diet" (ref - French).
- The American Heart Association have claimed that the diet is phony (ref).
- The Sacred Heart Medical Center also disclaim any association with the diet (ref).

Yea thats what I saw on the net when I looked it up too. My mother swears by it and my coworkers wife works with Altzeimer patients at a hospital and they use that diet there too.
So I'm unsure lol.
So I'm unsure lol.
what's to be unsure about? it's a very low calorie crash fad diet... and will definitely work for the short term.
the question is does it have enough of the nutrition needed daily and fiber to keep us healthy. does it provide enough calories to sustain us so we don't lose to fast?
most crash diets don't and they throw the body into a state where it releases water rapidly and the water is regained rapidly as soon as people quit the diet.
and the diet is not sustainable... how long can you just eat the soup (and few other items...)
diets don't work b/c people quit diets.
it's better to create a way to eat that you can enjoy with foods you enjoy that nourishes your body...
you need a certain amount of calories each and every day ~ you can spend the calories (like money) however you want on whatever food you want. shouldn't it be on something you enjoy?

Do you have any idea of how many "Sacred Heart" Hospitals there are in this country?
That diet is devoid of protein and very high in sodium. It's not good for you.
Thanks united2gether for posting all the information about this hoax.

I didn't put it up as a "everyone try this" thing =( sorry! My mom asked me to do it with her as she's done it several times before and swears by it. She also joined this site with me. I just wanted to get peoples opinion on it or see if anyone has tried it before.
I tried it and it made me so sick.. stay away!
LOL, this sounds awful!!!
"If you have eaten as above for three days and not cheated, you should find that you have lost 5-7 pounds"
Uh yes - of water weight, thats what happens when you deprive yourself of carbs for 3 days.
You really don't need to subject yourself to this.

That's ok princess! It's actually a pretty tasty soup, just not as a steady diet. I actually tried this back in the 1980s (we all did), and I got sick of it by the second day.
Another version was, you ate small, sensible meals but you could have all of this soup you wanted if you got hungry.

Thanks everyone for all your comments =)
It's good to hear both sides...and it seems there is more negative then positive. lol

this is definitely a fad diet that's not good to do. the soup on the other hand add's alot of veggies to one's diet and on cold winter days a great snack..thanks for the reminder!
i'm more of the mind of balanced carbs/fats/proteins with small meals thoughout the day to keep the blood sugar levels from falling too far down or spiking too far up. since i joined on the 22 of this month i like the food log and how it separates the carbs/fats/proteins so i can see that though i'm relatively healthy in eating..it's balanced with my craving of bad fats and carbs with increasing my cardio...so since i need to go food shopping later today i'll get the ingredients for this soup...
so to anyone who thinks that a diet that you can loss x # of pounds/inches in a week or two..it's a fad diet. like akins..that's a fad diet and increases cholestral in many who have done it..in my experience. just incorporate more healthy food options, a positive attitude and exercise and the pounds will come off. also a reward system where you give yourself one meal a week to be completely bad! or as simple as an ice cream or general tso chicken...just so you don't crave it.
good luck!

Hi princess_brooklyn
Please be careful of this plan.
While I knew about 12 people that tried this diet (1991-92) personally and many lost weight and looked great, I myself strictly followed this for 2 weeks (lost nothing ! go figure) my husband after approximately 2 days of adhering to this plan came home early from work light headed and nauseous.
The way I came to find this ?miraculous? diet plan was through my manager?s husband who received this plan from his DOCTOR!
(YES, a reputable dr. and this is a surprise because I as others here have found it to be a counterfeit ?diet from the doctors?.)
Everywhere I have seen it on the net it is being exposed as the dangerous non-affiliated medical diet that it deserves to be! While connected to no person or group.Where did this originate? I have been asking the question for years.
*I came by this....
My managers husband was approximately 50ish, over 6?3 - 6?5 Italian decent, overweight and needed heart surgery and prior to the surgery the doctor gave ?J? this diet he looked good and after his surgery was seeing a nutritionist... his health restored.:)
Then as interest grew in the ?diet? that started this transformation the copies of this diet was passed around the workplace and just about everyone did it and I was about to marry my husband so I needed that diet (lost nothing)
Many people dropped it rather quickly, gained a little back but as a consensus mostly did not feel it was an easy diet to adhere too.
These were mostly men on this diet, short-term loss small weight gain after.
The women lost too much in small time frame however were feeling weak much of the time while working at a physically strenuous job. Age range:I was 20 the eldest 60ish & all in between. (average :40's)
Age must be considered as well as medical conditions for any type of diet...though I suggest speaking to your dr. and personally I would follow the calories that is the ONLY thing that has worked for me and From Jan 1 2007 -today MY 39 BDAY !!! 150!!! I am working toward 110 :)
The dr wanted me to be 150ish by 3-15 -07 I guess I wont disappoint either of us...I have been struggling since Nov.30 06 start 166 portions failed, 01-01-07 166 at least I did not gain but now in 2 months 16 lbs vanished!
Thanks to Calorie Counter, it is becoming almost an obsession. count everything if you know and estimate & round up if uncertain.
As someone said earlier, it can be a nice soup but if you get hungry, I think you can do just as well eating an ?ordinary? Veggie soup
Do not waste your time on it

This diet was EVERYWHERE back in the 80s, way before the internet. I got a copy from someone at work. Another one that was really popular (and didn't work) was the 3 day banana and milk diet - 3 bananas and 3 glasses of milk every day for 3 days. Yep, I lost 4 pounds in 3 days, but I couldn't look at a banana for months and I gained it all back with in 2 weeks.
P.S.
This diet that I so "desperately needed" though not body conscious,exactly...I worried that having gained weight while dating I wanted to look my best on MY DAY, I guess we all have that dream I just really over reacted and listened to the wrong people, I was fine. size 14 but I was fine (bad thing I was so happy and nervous...etc,that I cried the ENTIRE time,he still said I do:)))
I met him, the love of my life at 115-120 gained by my wedding day 135 WOW,in 4 years why was I so worried !!!?!!!
Big deal kept gaining ( his cooking ) heaviest 190... he still loves me and is now trying to help it come off ..slowly but surely
110 here I come COUNT CALORIES

I started this diet today, but decided to quit just after lunch. I don't have a problem sticking to a diet like this - it's only 7 days, and I've done worse... But I got to thinking...
How is it that I'm not allowed to eat any vegetables on DAY 1 (only fruit) but the soup is NOTHING BUT vegetables? If you eat the soup, you're eating vegetables all day long. Made no sense as I started to think of this...

This diet is meant for obese patients about to undergo surgery...
but when I was EDNOS I tried this...the soup is actually not bad at all but it got old fast.

I think you should know that all the claims made on the internet about this diet are lies. There are hundreds of Sacred Heart Hospitals all over the country and not one of them espouses this diet. The other reseach centers, like Johns Hopkins, which are often mentioned in these articles, have disavowed it.
You can search all you want and you'll never find a single reputable reference or any research paper about this bogus fad diet.

A friend of mine, who worked at a hospital, tried this diet and lost 10 lbs.
It might work for some and not for others. I'm my opinion, it's better than other fad diets, so if you're set on doing a diet like that, do this one!
