official oatmeal thread!
I love my oats with:
Chopped green apple
Canned pumpkin
Blueberries
Grapes
A tsp of cocoa powder with splenda (7 added calories, and a rich chocolaty taste!)
Anybody got any new ideas? I've decided on oatmeal for dinner and was wondering how it would be on a sweet potato...? (I'm weird, i know! :-D)

I have nothing original for you. I like mine with brown sugar and dried fruit. I have stirred in a spoonful of peanut butter and one of All Fruit, just swirled it around, and that was very nice.
heres my favorite way to eat oatmeal:
strawberry oatmeal : this is often a before school breakfast.
3/4 cup of rolled old fashion oats
1 tbsp of warmed/hot strawberry preservs ( normal reduced sugar kind, NO artififcal sweetner kinds)
3 cut up diced strawberrys
1/4 cup of milk to cover and add texture
simply cook the oatmeal on stovetop/range , then serve, top with preservs ,. then put ice cold milk on it, followed by the diced and heated up strawberry chunks, its a awesome texture and hot/cool effect.
another good way to eat oatmeal is mix fruit and cream/milk in it while it cooks, also applesauce and cinnamoin is good too.

I like syrup and jelly in my oatmeal.
oatmeal without a doubt is one of the magic foods, its so good for you and so easy to make.
i have me 1/2 cup oatmeal, sprinkle some cinnamon, little bit of sugar free maple syrup and mix in strawberry yoplait light yogurt and it tastes fawkin awesome
ive also made old fashion steel cut oatmeal ( which too 40 minutes to cook) i put heavy cream and brown sugar in it, it was hard to finish my bowl it was so rich and thick.
I just tried something new the other day. I have a packet of instant oatmeal for breakfast at work like, EVERY MORNING and I make it with plain old hot water. I usually get the flavored packets, like maple and brown sugar. I only had plain ones left at the end of the week, so I was looking around on the Quaker website for ideas, and came across... CHAI TEA.
Yup, that's right. Chai Tea Oatmeal. I didn't even read the recipe, the name itself gave me the idea. I've been making my oatmeal now with tea packets. I have oodles of tea bags in my desk at work, herb teas, green teas, black teas, chai, etc...
SO if you make your oatmeal with water, make that bowl of water TEA water, and then add oatmeal. I also add a tsp of sugar (you can use splenda/stevia/any substitute if you like) and bada-bing it's oatmeal divinity! Compliments my hot mug of green tea every morning, too. :) Try it. You might be surprised.
Oh, and I'm sure it'd be good with milk, too, if that's how you make your oats. YUMMY!

i love cinnamon and nutmeg in my oatmeal =)

oatmeal = porridge?
I love cinnimon & apple in mine, or some jam, or just plain :) I use ricemilk to make mine because i can't tolerate milk. I guess because its savory it would go with a lot of things!
I don't eat set things for different meals - like porridge is for breakfast, sarnies are for lunch.. etc etc i'll eat porridge day and night!

Cinnamon, nuts, dried cranberries, apples.....
Mmm porridge yes. Every day I have some.
I like bananas in it best (all mushy and hot, oh gosh!!) but blueberries do well too. I'm not good at putting salt/sugar in tho - its always too much or too little. I dont usually add any sugar, but when i add salt i think "Too much" or "too little" or "needs sugar". I add splenda and think "too sweet" - lol, I'm so picky!!
Dried apricots and prunes work ok.
But if you're looking for "new things" I added an egg white after cooking my oatmeal (microwave) as I'd seen a recipe saying to do so will make it creamy. Well it was creamy. Just as if you added an egg white, Doesnt taste bad (as you add sugar and cinnamon anyway) so if you want a protein boost, try that.
often I sprinkle with wheat germ which is nice.
Want another oddity? I like in a dorm, so I microwave cook on on a s'which press. I;ve done oatmeal 'pancakes' (bit chewy but still nice) and .... oatmeal toasted s'which - talk about carby (but nice, I had fruit in it too)
What doesnt work? Kiwifruit :(
Any way to add cottage cheese to oatmeal?

hmmm oatmeal with vegimite and raspberry jam it's the best!!
Vegemite AND jam at the same time? Ooo! I LOVE vegemite and I love oatmeal and jam. MUST TRY SOON... sounds odd tho... I wish vegemite wasnt so sodium-riffic
Wow, and I've been eating mine with a little salt all this time...thanks for the amazing ideas, everyone! This will make my daily oatmeal a lot more interesting.
I eat steel cut oats every morning. Only thing i add is ground flax seed, cinnamon, nutmeg and either thawed frozen blueberries or dried figs. The figs bring up the calories quite a bit, so thats not very often.
If you are looking to add something sweet try apple sauce instead of sugar.
Since steel cut oats are the best oatmeal you can put in your body but take forever to cook, try making a big batch and reheat each serving in the morning. :)

I'm boring.
I just have my oatmeal with some Splenda.
I'd like to try the brown sugar Spenda though!
is it better to have the plain oats and add to it ..or are the pre-package ones alright??
My everyday breakfast is oatmeal. I find it keeps me filled for hours and energetic. I put chopped apple, a few raisins, 1/2 cup of quick oats and 2/3 cups h2o with a dash of salt into a micro safe bowl and nuke it for about 3 minutes. Add splenda. Yummmm.
For a later night snack I make my faux apple crumble with chopped apple, 1/3 cup oats and 1/3 cup skim milk. I nuke for a minute, stir and put 1 t of brown sugar and nuke again for 2 minutes. Rich and creamy and tastes like a real dessert for 196 cal, 18 cal fat. An indulgence which is warm and nurturing. I can imagine some lite frozen dessert on top to smooth it out, but I have not tried that. 1/2 cup at 90 cal more for a true treat.
