I just made these these today for the first time, and I must say, they are amazing! They are based on a recipe by Vegan Dad (link here - http://vegandad.blogspot.com/), revised by me. I only had a couple ounces of tempeh left, but I also had a little leftover tofu, so I added that in as well. I substituted BBQ sauce for the HP sauce, and used my own breadcrumbs made from Ezekiel bread.

"Perfect" Tempeh Burgers

  • 2 oz. tempeh, grated
  • 2 oz. extra-firm tofu, grated (make sure to press and squeeze out ALL of the water)
  • 1/4 cup breadcrumbs
  • 3 tbsp vital wheat gluten flour
  • 1/2 tsp sage
  • 1/2 tsp thyme
  • 1/2 tsp oregeno
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/4 tsp parsely
  • 1/4 tsp paprika
  • 1/4 tsp cumin
  • 1-2 drops of liquid smoke (NOT smoke flavoring)
  • 1 tbsp hoisin sauce
  • 3/4 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 tbsp homemade or store-bought BBQ sauce (I used the Veganomican recipe)
  • 3-4 tbsps water
Mix together the herbs, breadcrumbs, tempeh, and tofu. Then add in the sauces and liquid smoke. Once they are well incorporated, blend in the gluten flour. Add water as needed to form a patty that will stick together. Shape mixture into three (appx.) 3 oz. burgers and cook in skillet or on grill. May be frozen.

Wow, thanks for posting because I thought Vegan Dad has stopped posting because he's had Baked Tofu for Kids on the front page for weeks... but I think I just had it bookmarked incorrectly! I like his recipes.
Nope! He still posts daily, thank goodness.

I recommend the breakfast sausages and the seitan pot pie too. Mmmm... He sure is good with "mock-meats", hahah.
I've never eaten seitan but ever since I saw a recipe on fatfreevegan's blog for Seitan Ribz, I've been tempted.

Praise seitan. A place near me makes the most wonderful vegan seitan reubens. Tongue out

i LOVE seitan. i've never made it myself, just eaten it at restaurants.
