I just went for my yearly physical and found out that I am OBESE. Even thought I knew I needed to lose some weight, I was not prepared to hear that I am clinically OBESE. I am fairy comfortable with the terms overweight, thick, hefty, big girl. But OBESE???
I am 32 years old, 5'6 and 184 lbs.
I definitely need some support. I didn't see any open forums for people who need to lose 40-50 pounds.
Thanks and good luck to everyone!
I am your same height but weigh even more...sometimes I think the words "clinically obese" are a little harsh. I need to lose 50+ but I am focused on finding my healthy weight. Or in other words, the weight where my body will settle with proper diet and exercise. Supposedly, us 5'6" women are supposed to weigh around 130 but that will probably not happen for me...I am shooting for a goal of 150. Good luck. You will do fine. ![]()
I hate that word too. I'm 5'2" and at 183. It's harsh!
Hmm, I started out at that weight (5'51/2") as well and no one said "clinically obese" to me either. In fact, I was at the doctor's office when I noticed and he didn't say a word.
I'm 150 now.
But you are not clinically obese -- at least not by BMI standards. According to the BMI tool:
Based upon your current Body Mass Index (BMI) of 29.7, you are currently classed as moderately overweight.
To reach a healthy BMI of 24.9 you need to weigh 154. So your goal is now much smaller. That's not to say that you might not wish to go lower than 154, but as an initial goal, that's certainly not bad.
