I was just taking some measurements to you know, brighten my day (
) and started thinking about this forum.
I've seen a million "how big is your (body part) and what size do you wear?" threads. I'm gonna let you in on a little secret: we're all shaped differently.
I know, I was surprised too.
I am the classic (and most hated) apple shape. You women who wear size 4s have the same thigh and hip measurements I do. Lemme tell you something, I ain't no size 4.
There are always threads like "How do I make my legs thinner"? I can will my legs thinner. I just lost a half an inch thinking about this thread. I lost 10lbs recently and lost 1.5 inches off of each thigh. You know how much I lost around the waist? ZERO. I lost ZERO INCHES. My friend can lose .2 lbs and her waist is 4 inches smaller. I hate her.
I could lock myself in a closet without food and water for a month and maybe lose an inch off my waist.
anyway I was just thinking about this on my run today.
I am the pear and it sucks because you have a waist and then comes your hips and @$$. My waist is 6" smaller than my hips so you can imagine how pants and shorts fit - THEY DON'T.
My friend Nikki can stop drinking a soda a day and lose more in a week than I do in a month.
Life isn't fair :-(
I know what you mean but Im more like your friend
but I see girls that post that are my height and weight but wear a 0-4
Im 8-10, 6 if Im lucky
I have large hips and always will
Im starting to embrace that though, because I also have a tiny waist (which would give me an hourglass if I had any chest, but I dont so Im more pear)
all i tell myself is "Hey, at least ill have an easier time giving birth with these wide hips"
I'd sell my son to the highest bidder for a pear shape. You can still wear really cute tops and look sexy. When you're an apple and overweight, nothing looks cute on top. NOTHING. When you try to show off your slim bodyparts, you tend to look like a pumpkin with toothpicks sticking out
I should add the apple also looks man-shaped when thin. My hips are thin and I have no waist so the apple then becomes a ruler.
R U kidding? You look great!!!
I have to say the hourglass isn't much fun either....I wear a size 8 but I still have a ton of weight to lose still....and being large on top I have to buy shirts that are tight in the chest and lose in the stomach......I think all shapes have there good points and bad points!!!!!!

and the grass is always greener on the other side, I know
Apples have the distinction of being the unhealthiest shape, so there's that
I'm with you on the hourglass thing. My biggest problem when I was skinny was finding pants that fit in the waist and the butt. If it fit me in the waist, it looked like my butt was going to pop out of them. If it fit my butt, the waist band gapped and sagged like mad. As for tops, I used to have to take them in to have them altered. If they fit through the neck, shoulders, and chest, I'd have the rest taken in.
I don't know if this helps, but I found a website that discusses the "apple" body shape. (I don't know much about the website's reliability. Sorry!) Basically, it says that long-term stress can cause weight gain in the abdominal area (due to cortisol) and that the best way to reduce the "apple" shape is through diet, exercise and stress-reduction techniques. I'm not sure how correct this information is... I actually thought that our body shapes were predominantly governed by our genes... But I guess it's worth a shot.
Anyhow, I also found this video that gives tips on what types of clothing looks flattering on apple body shapes.
Lol, I just realized that you never asked for help... Yay for unsolicited advice!

Thank you. Its been a long journey from 220lbs and Im still working on it. But I appreciate the positive feedback
Ah, grass. Greener. Fence. Indeed!
Try BEING an hourglass who now HAS a belly. Thankfully it still curves in on the sides but pooches out in the front. If I don't get this in control Im'a gonna be a straight line!!!
Knowing it's still under there somewhere and never really having seen what it can look like to be curvy AND thin is my inspiration!
This thread is a great reminder, spirochete. You're so right...the reason Jessica Alba can look like Jessica Alba is because she IS Jessica. We all look different, lose weight differently, and have hit the genetic jackpot in OTHER ways, I'd wager.

A little friendly advice never hurt anyone!
edit: ok this is making me laugh:
The apple shaped body effect can be minimized with a sensible diet, regular exercise and stress-reduction techniques.
I can lose weight with a sensible diet and exercise? Now that's just crazy talk!
hmm...who thought of comparing women to fruits anyways? The problem nowadays is that clothes are made to fit model-women, the ones that rarely exist in nature. I hate seeing the threads "what actor/actress do you want to look like" because they are payed to look good - they have trainers, nutritionists, yoga instructors, personal cooks, all people that make them look good. They really don't have anything else to do during the day either. They can spend as long as they want in the gym and unlike regular people don't go to work 10hours a day.
Thats the thing - it isn't the women out there with hips and butts and tummies: its the crappy clothes that aren't made to fit these real bodies but are instead tailored for impossible curveless figures.
Hahaha. I posted something today about the same issue. It seems like I lost all my weight from my "chesticles" and not from where I want it gone... my thighs.

My pants NEVER fit when I try them on unless they're the really silly "super stretch denim" that fit like spandex, or if they're sweat pants.
I have to get every single pair of pants both taken in at the waist and hemmed. And it's not really because of my hips, I just have an unusually large bum.
Hourglasses have it rough too!
If pants fit me around the waist, it looks like I have a load in my pants.
If they fit my butt, they are bisecting me across the waist
I have one small zone of proper fit that only a few pairs of jeans can hit. If they go too low, tummy pops out like a Homer Simpson profile. If they go too high, I can't close them.
I want a generic body, dammit.
We all have different bodies. I think the reason we have it rough is the ****ing clothing manufacturers. Grr. Must learn how to sew.
I'm like a balloon with a string.
I'm so frig'n top heavy, it's a wonder I don't fall over when standing up.
My shoulders are broad, my chest is huge... my tummy is big...
But my @ss, thighs & legs? Looks like I don't even have them.

And I just gained 2 inches in my arse by just reading your post... I think maybe it migrated from my ever shrinking chest!
oh, and pgm.... you want to talk about pear, there is a 10-11 INCH between my waist and hips.... yes you read that right, 10-11 inch difference, so if you can't find pants that fit, I don't have a chance in hell.
Oh, and a size 4! sure I have a tiny waist, but with an extra 10+ inches to get over to get there, FORGET it, I could barely get a size 4 over my arse!
Then of course there is my ever shrinking top half, I am quickly transforming from a pear into more of a bell!
But really, I have just learned to like my pear shape. I think thats all you can do... either that or I could get a boob job
And yes... I think I did have an easier time pushing my DD out of my big birthing hips! So I guess there is one advantage to my unusually large bottom half (at least thats what I will go with!)
