Any good fat free/low fat mayo?

Quote  |  Reply

Do you know any good fat free or very low fat mayonnaise? I really can't stand the sugary flavour of it yet I don't want to eat the regular kind.

Or do you have any ideas on what I could add to it to make it taste better?

I use non fat yogurt or sour cream instead of mayo most of the time, but in a tuna sandwich, for example, I still need mayo..

Thank you for your help! :)

Seems like most low fat or fat free items just have tons of sugar added to make up the taste they lose from removing the fat.  Sugar is worse than fat, so you are better off just using the full fat versions in moderation.

Or switch to something else entirely, such as mustard, honey mustard, hummus, etc.  For tuna you can still use the sour cream or yogurt but just add a dash of vinegar for that "zing".

i use one that has olive oil in it...maybe it's Kraft brand. it's really good and has 4g fat, 0 sat fat. i still have to watch it portion wise, i love mayo, but it tastes the same as the full fat kinds. i hate low fat mayo. yuck.

Kraft low fat is terrible, imo.  I really like hellmans low fat, not the light, the one that has 40 calories and 4 fat.  The light has 20 calories and tastes like crap.  I do like miracle whip light on some things, but hellmans is the way to go if you like the taste of regular mayo and not the sweeter stuff.  Add some crumble blue cheese and red wine vinegar and it makes a killer salad dressing!

Edit: To clarify, it is the one that has 40 cal, but it is called reduced fat.  The light one has only 20 calories and tastes like crap!  Sorry for any confusion!  Noticed this at the grocery store last night.

I second Hellman's. Kraft is nasty and Miracle is sweet.

have you tried the Lemon Tuna by Bumblebee - it is really good with the light mayo

I like the taste of Helman's Regular Mayo - but it is full of fat. I have now switched to Smart Balance Omega Mayonnaise.

It has only 50 calories and 5 grams fat per TBSP and it takes the same as Helman's.

For tuna fish, I mix up one can of tuna with 1/2 TBSP Smart Balance mayo, 1 tsp Grey Poupon dijon mustard, 1 TBSP capers, and add onion and celery.

If you have a Trader Joe's near you, I recommend their Reduced Fat Mayonnaise. It tastes fab and is only 35 calories per TBS.

As for tuna salad, I've started making mine with mostly spicy brown mustard and just a TBS of that TJ's mayo, sometimes less. I think more mustard than mayo tastes better, anyway.

I like Hellmann's also.  I like a lot of mayo so to reduce how much I use I smush half of a small avocado and mix it with the mayo.  SO GOOD!

I prefer Miracle Whip.  I prefer their Light as opposed the their FF.

I don't like Hellman's regular mayo so I never bothered trying their light or FF.

I'm a miracle whip girl myself (even for tuna salad) & I recommend Miracle Whip Light (http://www.calorie-count.com/calories/item/40 12.html)

Oooh that avocado idea sounds fab

I would like to add my vote for the Hellman's reduced fat (NOT fat free). Here in Canada, it has half the calories (regular is 100 cals per Tbsp, the r-f is 50 cals). Of course there is nothing like real mayo, but their low fat is quite palatable for mixing into stuff.

I too like mayo for tuna salad, and I have found a little trick. If I buy a can of flaked light tuna instead of the chunk light, I only need one Tbsp of mayo for the whole can. It smushes up easier than the chunk and is less dry. Throw some chopped dill pickle in there and YUM. I usually eat the whole can of tuna for lunch (I like it in a pita or ON a pita with a fat-free cheese slice to make a tuna melt) so this was an awesome discovery.

i buy plain yogurt, and a suggestion on the back of the tub is to mix equal parts plain yogurt and mayonnaise - supposedly you can't tell the difference? i haven't tried it because i don't like mayonnaise, but maybe it would be worth a shot.

Sigh, I love mayo, but I've cut it out completely because I either don't like the low fat versions, or they're still so high in fat that theres no point. I just have mayo very occasionally and REALLY enjoy it when I have it.

And I agree the purple label practically fat free Hellmans is disgusting.

Seems like I am the minority here.  I do not like the fat free but I don't mind Hellmann's Light.  I don't really eat it in anything but salads or tuna so it's harder to tell the difference but I use very little in tuna to begin with.  I agree that nothing tastes better than full fat mayo but remember that famous saying, "Nothing tastes better than being thin feels." =)
