Why does CC rank yogurt so low?

Quote  |  Reply

I realize it has a fair amount of sugar, but Im not sure if I agree with the grade they give of a C for my nonfat yogurt.

Does anyone else find CCs grades on yogurt a little ridiculous?

I was wondering the same thing! I eat a grocery store brand (Kroger for Ralph's) and it's fat free and sweetened with Splenda. Sure, there's some sugar in it, but I don't think it's worth a C grade - especially when it's only 100 calories for an 8 oz. cup!

I give that grade the finger.

Ha! (cracked myself up with that last line there!)

Plain low-fat yoghurt mostly gets an A-.  If your non-fat yogurt is the fruit kind it'll contain quite a high percentage of sugar because the fruit pulp added is rather like jam.   Adding fresh fruit to plain yoghurt gets around this one.

A lot of good foods get a low grade.  Olive oil for example.  But even if your yoghurt scores a C, as a small part of the rest of your day's foods it won't affect the overall outcome.

Its vanilla flavored and I mix a lot of cinnamon into it because honestly, I dont like the taste of yogurt. I guess Ill try getting some plain yogurt.

I am going to the store today to shop for a dinner Im making tomorrow (Parchment baked salmon, veggie quinoa and sauteed asparagus) so ill pick some up then.

I guess you can still try adding stuff to the plain yogurt... don't know about cinnamon but fruit is great,... maybe fruit with cinnamon (say apples and cinnamon) and maybe other spices... You can put it all in a blender, say fruit... hmm

If you don't like the taste of sweetened fruit yogurt, I really doubt you'll like plain yogurt! It's definitely more bitter but way more healthful. It took me a few tries to get used to it but now all I eat is plain.

Hmm...  The nonfat yogurts I eat (three different brands so far, depending what's on sale) have all gotten grades above B; my current one gets an A.  Maybe whoever entered the nutritional info. for your yogurt left out some of the vitamins?  The analyzer bumps up grades of foods with lots of calcium, iron, etc.

Edited to note that I'm talking about fruity yogurts sweetened with sugar.

I eat the yoplait fat free yogurts which are about 100 calorie and have lots of different flavors.  They get an A-.

Susiecue

I entered the information, it was exactly what was on the back. its Wawa brand.

Im thinking of picking up a pack of another brand when I go to the store.

and Karozel Ill try the yoplait ones, does it come in vanilla? I hate the fruity stuff

This time of year especially, think about adding unsweetened yogurt to your fruit instead of the other way around.  Then score it as fruit.

I eat plain non fat yoghurt, I think the CC thing also factors in the natural sugar that occurs in milk (lactose) so it considers it high, especially if there is added sugar.  My juices get graded down for naturally occurring sugar.  I really don't consider the grade anyway, it doesn't factor in your comprehensive daily nutrition.

I only like a few of the fruity ones.  I stick with

very vanilla

boston cream pie

orange dreamsicle (not sure if it's actually called that)

key lime pie

lemon pie

your yogurt probably has more than just a "fair" amount of sugar and deserves the C.  Dannon Light and Fit gets an 'A' if you want to try switching.

I love yogurt. I even love  the plain. My favorite is  the Stonyfield brand. It is organic and very good.

I love yogurt and am also saddened by it's low CC grade.  However, I just discovered Dannon Light N' Fit yogurt, which is made with splenda (I think) and is only 60 calories for all the different flavors.  It doesn't have the extra-sugary taste that some yogurts have, and it's surprisingly filling.  I add a 1/2 cup of regular cheerios to it and it's a fiber and protein-rich, filling breakfast for only about 120 calories.

I like the Dannon Light & Fit, but you get 2-3 ounces less for the same amount of calories ... and the generic I buy are only $0.50 each. Sorry, I'm cheap, and as long as I'm in my caloric budget AND not going over my recommended sugar overall for the day, I'm cool with the "C" grade. :-)

CC is inconsistent with many of its ratings, not just yogurt.  If someone figures this mystery out , then it might explain why the same type of organic milk (skim, whole, 2%, whatever) gets different grades when it comes from different companies.  Are some cows really better than others?!?.......Smile
