Bread suggestions, please. lovinmylife24
  Jul 23 2008 14:03

I really love sandwiches and peanut butter on toast, however, I have not tried any non-white breads that I have liked.

I do not like wheat at all.  I have tried a couple of the grain bread and don't like the taste of those either.  I only like white bread and I cannot stand that I am not acquiring a taste for non-white bread.  I have acquired a taste for onions (one veggie which I would NOT eat before), why can't I find a bread that is better for me that I like the taste of.

I have almost completely eliminated bread from my food list because I don't like that I am eating so many carbs, calories and it has very little nutritional value.

I eat the thinly sliced Sunbeam bread which is only 130 calories for 2 slices (which I don't consider to be too bad compared to some of the grainy breads that are higher in calories but better nutrition).

So my favor to ask of you all is to suggest some breads for me that taste good toasted and are low cal.  I feel lost because I can't find a bread I like.  Makes me wish I could take a toaster to the store, take one piece of every loaf and give them all a try.  Haha.

Thanks in advance!

I eat Healthy Life. It's 35 calories a slice, and I believe it also comes in white.

Bakery rye because there is a very short ingredient list and a decent fiber content.  If you haven't tried it, go ahead, you might like it. Tastes nothing like wheat btw.

How about pumpernickel or marble rye or seedless rye.

I personally love wheat bread and don't eat white bread anymore. It took some getting used to but it is worth it!

My husband won't eat wheat bread either. But he will eat Wonder Bread white wheat. It's still bleached flour, but at least it has some fiber in it.  Only 50 calories a slice. I think the Sara Lee brand is gross.

you should try Nature's Own Honey Wheat bread, it's my absolute favorite! it has only 60 calories. They also have a light brand which is the same but with only 45 calories. My boyfriend who normally doesn't like wheat bread absolutely loves this bread! give it a try... great with peanut butter!

In order to ween my boyfriend from white bread (which has gone so-so, he still has to eat his banana sandwhichs on SunBeam), I started with Sara Lee's Soft and Smooth Whole Grain White Bread. It has the same feel as white, and he really didn't notice much of a difference. (And he is one PICKY eater!!! Don't get me started. I've seen him throw away an entire DiGornio pizza because "it must've come from a different plant or something" and "it didn't taste regular".... That was a bad day. I was pretty upset at such a waste.)

Now he'll eat the Arnold 100% Wheat... It's rather smooth and doesn't have any "oats or junk" (as he says) in it. Although he'll still go for the whole wheat white for his peanut butter on toast. =/

I don't know the calorie content, though. But it looks like some people have suggested other whole grain whites, and that sounds like the way to go!

And BTW - I've only ever eaten wheat bread, but the taste of rye is awful to me. =( Sourdough is another viable option. It has the same feel as white, but a little bit of a different, sour taste, and I know low carb diets like South Beach will let you eat it.

I'm a huge fan fo the Nature's own breads.  They also have lots of fiber in them, which is always a plus--especially for the light ones, because it fills you up more than the store brand light breads would.

Thomas english muffins are really yummy.  Try the Honey Wheat or the Light Multi-grain.  Both have a lot of fiber.

I 3rd Nature's Own!

I really like Arnold Lite Style Wheat or Oat Nut for everyday...but when I'm craving a roll that is soft and sweet I opt for Martin's Potato Rolls.  They are SO GOOD!  and lots of fiber.  130 calories for a regular sized hotdog or sandwich bun.  Killer with pb&j!  I made a tuna melt on one yesterday too!

I eat light wheat bread. It doesn't taste as "wheaty" as regular whole grain wheat bread. It's only 35 calories a slice! My fiance would never eat wheat bread until I came along and he's grown to like it. However, when he has a sandwich, he still prefers white bread... but I don't buy it so he doesn't have a choice. You should try whole wheat pasta as well (if you haven't already)... it gives your dishes so much more flavor!

Pepperidge Farm light Wheat is great!  Very low carbs and calories. Also Thomas's english muffin whole wheat.  YUM

hmmm.. Doesn't wonder make a 100% whole wheat bread that seems to be like white bread? Not sure but worth a try to see. You can always try manna bread or Ezekiel bread. This is found frozen in the health section. It is frozen because it is all natural and basically the healthiest bread you will ever eat, plus it tastes really nice. You can also try some light rye bread. Rye bread is very healthy. The problem with white bread is that it's just crap and is bad for you, and it helps people to become addicted to bad carbs, and quickly turns to sugar in the blood. One thing you can try to help you could be making a sandwich with one slice of whole wheat bread (not the kind with the bits in it) and the other slice white. That way at least it's bit better, and you can practice getting off your white bread addiction :-)

Fiber One brand has some good breads- I believe even a white one- under 100 calories for two slices if I recall correctly and each slice has 5 grams of fiber- a great way to feel fuller for longer.

Also Weight Watchers has their own bread line as well.

I also have found a country potato bread (white and doughy) that was only 35 calories a slice- unfortunately not sure of the brand.

Well, Sara Lee has bread for 35 a slice, I think it is.

Thanks for all the replies everyone!  I know white bread is so bad for me, thats why I want away from it so badly!

I am going to try some of these.  Thank you all for the replies.  If you still want to respond to this post, please do so.  I am making a list so when I go to the store tomorrow I can take a look at the different ones suggested and check calories on them and what not.

Thank you all again, you have been most helpful!!

I don't know what part of the country you live in, but I use Nickels Light Wheat. I'm in Ohio and it's a local bakery so you might not be able to find it. Nature's Own is really good if you can find it. Once I moved up north I wasn't able to. Sara Lee is also good. Just keep trying until you find one... and in the mean time, whatever you don't like, go for a walk in the park, feed the ducks and geese... surely they'll love whatever you don't. Good luck!

Awwww.  I wish I could.  I used to love doing that when I was kid, unfortunately they banned that in this area.  Nobody is really happy about it but you could get a hefty fine if you are caught.

I am going grocery shopping tomorrow so hopefully I will pick a good one.

Wonder bread makes a white bread that they market for kids that has a lot of the same nutritional value as wheat bread.  But I am sure there are some bad parts of that stuff.

Do you have a Costco near you?  We usually get the same 7 grain bread from there but this last time we decided to try the Kirkland (that is the Costco brand) wheat bread.  First off it was $3.85 for two extra large loafs.  This bread has 70 calories, 4 grams of fiber and is very much like the consitency of White bread.  Not only is the price, calories and fiber right the taste is freaking fantastic.  I highly recomend this bread.
