I'm starting to freak out. jblarghp
  Jul 23 2008 04:30

Alright, so I guess I should start off by mentioning I'm a bit of a hypochondriac.

That aside, I have had a sharp pain on the right side of my head, and I just have this horrible feeling I have a brain tumor. I'm very nervous! I've been researching symptoms online (which I'm not supposed to do) and it's definitely making me more worried. One of the symptoms had to do with weird sensations in your hands, and my hands will go numb sometimes (which I know can be related to anxiety/panic attacks.)

Does anyone know any major symptoms of a brain tumor?

I can't mention this to my friends or family because they'll just call me crazy, blame it on my anxiety, etc.  I have a doctors appointment next month, but how do you ask to get checked for something like that? Especially already having a history with anxiety.  My last doctor was a fruit loop, I can't even remember the last time I've had blood taken. God knows what's wrong with me!

I will not be sleeping tonight.

Is it a constant sharp pain?  Or does it just come out of nowhere and catch you off guard and only last a couple of seconds if that?

As a fellow "mild" hypochondriac... yeah. I am like 99.9999% sure it is ALL in your head. I always think I'm having an allergic reaction after I eat anything... even if it's not a freaking allergin! I can actually feel my lips/tongue/throat swell... my cheeks go numb... my neck gets itchy... and it's all because I'm so nervous about having an allergic reaction. In reality.. nothing's happening to me (aside from an increased heart rate).

Weird sensations in your hands... well.. that narrows it down to like.. everything. =P You might've just pinched a little nerve or lost some circulation. No biggie! And headaches can be caused by a variety of things. Weather, temperature, STRESS, fatigue, noise, light, foods, etc.

If it still actually bothers you... just let the doctor know that you've been having some headaches and your fingers tingle a bit and you were wondering if it was normal. DON'T mention a tumour or I can promise your doctor will inwardly roll his eyes and think "ANOTHER hypochondriac...". If he, a medical professional, thinks it's a tumour he'd let you know. =) Try and relax... occupy yourself with something to take your mind off of it.

Depending on where the tumor is will depend on the systems.
My mother's brain tumor affected her legs, whereas my grandma's brain tumor affected her her right arm and gave her seizures.

you think you are freaking about having a brian tumor?  My odds are a lot better than yours.

Get yourself to the doctor and have a checkup.  Stay off of the internet health sites.  They just mess with your head.

Probably a constant headache for a tumor. CAT scan can find one but it's costly, and has up to 25x the radiation of a chest x-ray..

I have heard that you don't get pain in your head with brain tumors.  My great-aunt had one and for months she was misdiagnosed with Blood Pressure medication problems, so it was dizziness, equilibrium issues, nausea.  No headaches.

Sounds like a pinched nerve to me.  Sometimes a pinched nerve in the back or neck feels stronger in the head and of course, they can be felt in the arms or hands.

Make sure you are well-hydrated.

Kutiepi555-It's definitely not constant. It doesn't catch me off guard, but that's probably because I'm expecting it...

Thanks everyone for the responses/advice! I'm trying to keep my mind occupied especially because my jaw feels like it's starting to freeze up. Hopefully when my doctor checks me out everythings good...maybe I'll try to get looked at sooner.

Your jaw feels like it is freezing up.

Go and see your dentist about TMJ.  Before I was diagnosed and got my appliance I had bad migranes and my jaw, and neck always ached.

I was wondering because I get migraines a lot and the way I for sure know I am going to get one is that I get a sharp pain on the right side of my head.  It lasts about 1-2 seconds but it's so bad that I have to stop what I am doing and hold my head.  Sometimes if I move my head too soon, I'll get another pain.  I, like you, am a major hypochondriac, so I thought it could be a brain tumor.  I looked it up and apparently they are called "ice pick" headaches because it literally feels like you are being stabbed in the brain with an ice pick.  All of the stuff I read said it was common and people with migraines usually suffer them the day before they get one.  Once I read that I was curious and sure enough, every time I get that sharp pain, the next day is hell.

I was just wondering if maybe that's what you have, because it certainly isn't life threatening.  I'm in your shoes.  Every ache and pain I think I am going to die.  It sucks.

That's very possible, I do get migranes often. I'm curious now if I'll get one tomorrow.

I'm curious now about the TMJ too. I always thought my jaw freezing up had to do with panic attacks, but now that I think about it..it will happen occasionally out of nowhere.

Or maybe I'm just plain crazy!

hi, i have a tumor in my brain.  i thought i had anxiety.. well, i do, but some of my anxiety attacks were actually auras.  that is when your brain starts to missfire some signals around.  auras can have many symptoms and could last for any number of minutes, and occur before the physical symptoms of a seizure. (you may have auras without the physical seizure)

i had had auras starting as a freshman in high school, but i didnt get a grand mal seizure until dec. 1, 2007 (i graduated high school in '06).  only after going to the emergency room via ambluence did i get tested and MRIs done and more tests to find where the seizures were coming from.

anyway- if you are really concerned, or have any other symptoms, like horrible migranes (i had one where i was seeing double) GET AN MRI- that is where they found my tumor (i have surgery scheduled for september).

good luck! and see a doctor, not just a general md, a real one.

Oh, and if anybody has ever had surgery at MayoClinic in Rochester minnesota,by Dr. Marsh please message me, id love some input

as a fellow hypochondriac myself, i know the feeling.

i was having very sharp pains/bad headaches about 3 years ago .. and of course i thought it was a brain tumor. i went to a neurologist because the headaches were REALLY bad .. like, to the point where i couldn't function.

i got an MRI done on my brain, and it turns out i have a benign pineal brain cyst, but finding that was just incidental and didn't have any affect on my headaches, they just 'accidentally' found it. i still have to get check-up MRI's every 2 years to make sure it doesn't grow, but the headaches were definitely attributed to my anxiety.

remember, odds are -- it ISN'T a tumor! you're fine! :) if you're worried, go see a neurologist to get things checked out just for your own peace of mind.

oh & a word of advice -- STOP LOOKING UP SYMPTOMS ON THE INTERNET!! the internet is a hypochondriac's worst enemy at times. most symptoms can be attributed to THOUSANDS of conditions.

Hi there. I didn't really read through the responses yet so this may have already been mentioned...sorry.

What you have really sounds like a migraine to me. Migraines can be really weird...pretty much any type of pain anywhere in your head...and they can come and go and hurt really badly and freak you out a lot. I know from experience. And they can strike any time...even if you've never had one before.

Actually, numbness/tingling often goes along with migraine headaches, either as a precursor, during the headache, or afterwards. My tongue frequently goes numb when I get a migraine, sometimes my arms and legs. It scared me so freaking much the first time...I thought I was having a stroke or something (at 16...right) But my doctor said it's quite common and not to be concerned.

Having said all that, I would still recommend seeing a doctor. You can explain your symptoms and they probably will do an MRI to rule out any tumors or other issues and give you medicine if it is a migraine. GOOD LUCK! PLEASE DON'T FREAK OUT!

That's what my migraines feel like. Sometimes I want to bang my head into a wall (sometimes I do!) the pain is so bad and sharp.

#14 marceleric Jul 24 2008 13:59

Definitely look up TMJ--and see if the symptoms correlate with yours.  I started getting some REALLY sharp pains in my head and it was also freaking me out.  I went on the internet and typed in my symptoms and that's how I found it.  (I always try to research before I go to the doctor so HE doesn't think I'm a hypochondriac!  LOL!)

I called my dentist and they sent me to an oral surgeon who confirmed I had TMJ.  (And I didn't have any problems with my jaw locking up)  But I was clenching my jaws at night, so they made me a mouthpiece to wear at night...all better now.
