Best thing to eat after working out hammonrj

One of the biggest problems I have in a given week of trying to maintain a good diet is right after a big workout.   I usually can never seem to feel full after I have a big workout session no matter what I eat or how much water I drink.  I realize I probably need to get on a more regular workout schedule that blends in with my normal schedule so I can eat a normal meal afterwards but still wanted to get some ideas as I am in transition.   Is the solution to eat a small snack before the workout or a certain type of food I should try to eat afterwards?

I think it is a good idea to have a nutritious and easily digestible snack an hour or 2 before a workout.  I don't like to workout on an empty stomach but, at the same time, I don't want to feel full while exercising.  So I usually just have a piece of fruit, a low-fat yogurt, or something along those lines.  Afterward, it is a completely different story.  You need to replenish your energy so carbs are a must after a workout, preferably whole grains so something like brown rice or whole grain pasta is great.  These carbs are filling and good for you, plus they replenish the energy you lose when you workout.  Also, exercise wears down your muscle tissue.  In order to increase muscle recovery, it is a good idea to have a solid punch of protein.  Foods like eggs (without too much yolk) and fish are also good.  I think any meal that has the above foods will make you feel full after a workout.

For after a work-out: I was told to have protein so i have eaten whole wheat crackers (Blue Menu by presidents choice, they are healthier) with all natural organic peanut butter, some fruit like apples or raspberries, and of course water. I don't usually eat right before a work out, and if i do it's usually lunch and then i wait about 45 minutes before i go, to let the food digest. Hope this helps! Enjoy:)

Actually, peanut butter and a whole grain carb (like bread, low-salt crackers, etc) are a good PRE-workout snack because it has a good ratio of fat-carb-protein to give you sustained energy... good fuel for a workout.

After a workout, it's best to eat something protein rich. My two favorite snacks are 1/2 can of tuna on crackers + 1 cup fruit juice or 1 cup chocolate soy milk + 1/2 whole grain bagel with real fruit jam. The sugar in the fruit/fruit juice replenishes your energy and the crackers/bagel with good carbs and the protein from the milk/tuna helps repair the muscles that just worked out out so hard.

It's best to eat the snack 15-60 mins after a workout, followed by a good meal 2 hours later.

Here's a good article on what to eat after a workout: http://www.intense-workout.com/post_workout.html
