| Quick question about canned peaches... | ||
| Jul 22 2008 15:10 | ||
So, I have a standard size can of peaches in heavy syrup to eat with my lunch today. There are 3.5 servings in the can and 100 calories per serving. The peaches are in heavy syrup. Here is my question...If I drain out the heavy syrup and rinse the peaches with water, will I reduce the calories? I'm not sure if the nutritional information is assuming that people will drink the syrup. It's hard for me to believe that the peaches alone would be 350 calories per can. Thanks for you help! P.S. Without the syrup, I am estimating that the entire can would be about 200 calories. Am I way off? |

Yes you'd reduce the calories. I'm not sure by how much since the peaches will have been 'cooked' in the syrup in the can and will probably have absorbed some of the sugar. Maybe weigh the contents of the can before and after rinsing to see what weight you have left. Then use the 'cals per 100g' to calculate the calorie level.
Stated calories on any packaged food will be 'as sold' unless otherwise indicated e.g. 'drained solids'. |

Not sure where you shop but I got peaches that are sweetened with Splenda. They are 35 calories for 1/2 cup. (3.5 servings per can). 7 grams of sugar per serving. It is a generic brand of peaches. See if maybe your store sells them that way for future purchases. |

yea i think the canned peaches i get are the same as lovinmylife24's. Its not generic tho. they're called "no sugar added" peaches and they probably have splenda in em i dunno. but they're only 105 cals for the whole can and they're sooo tasty!!! I drain that can too but i dunno if the cals go down significantly so i dont even count it as less. |
