Foods that are low cal that you can eat more of-- javagen3

So, in order to fill up, what foods do you allow yourself to eat a lot of? I would think that fresh veggies would be at the top of the list. Is there anything else?

boiled eggs are pretty good at about ~70 calories each and if you're watching cholesterol just scoop out the yolk. So it shouldn't be more than ~50 calories an egg and they can be very filling b/c of the high protein content.

I can't think of anything better than vegetables but that gives you a really wide selection of foods to go at.... from Aubergine to Zucchini!  Grilled, roasted, steamed, raw.... thousands of combinations.  My personal favourite 'filler' snack would be raw vegetable sticks with a few tablespoons of hummus dip.  100 cals would buy you a massive plateful!   And air-popped pop-corn isn't bad either if you want something that takes a long time to eat.

Just a note about the boiled egg, if you scoop out the yolk of a medium egg it would only be 17-20 calories for the white.  The white is all protein, the yolk is half fat.

It isn't quantity that fills you up, it is quality.  Focus on eating balanced and you will not be hungry as long as you are eating the appropriate allocated calories for your stats.  That means, every meal should consist of carbs, protein, and fat, even snacks.

I eat cooked or raw veggies, especially sweet potatoes because they are soo filling and not high in cal. Also things like popcorn, zero% fat yogurt, apples.

I was just thinking about boiling up some eggs to have on hand. One egg would certainly be enough to fill me up. Don't think I can just eat the whites as it's so bland though.

Sweet potatoes are great but don't they have a high sugar content? I'll have to look.

I will definately try the hummus and raw veggie route. That would be such an easy one to grab at the store and take to work.

oatmeal/other high fiber cereal like kashi go lean really fills me up. raw veggies, fruits, crackers with hummus are all low cal and very filling.

one thing i do when i get hungry is drink coffee/tea- this along with a small snack makes me last longer than just a snack alone.

Well its still got an A grade on here which is pretty good. And if you eat a medium sized one it fills you up and only has like almost 8g of sugar which isn't too bad if it stops you from snacking on worse foods. Plus it has lots of vitamins and things =]

sauerkraut, dill pickles, air popped popcorn, boullion

Careful with the hummus....anything over 2 tbsp and you get into pretty high calorie territory.

The sugar in fruits and vegetables is something you really shouldn't concern yourself with, especially given all of the GOOD properties in those foods. The sugar in a sweet potato shouldn't be considered the same as a bag of twizzlers or something.

I'm with you. I can't eat the white part of the egg alone. But that's a great idea that I hadn't thought of. I will boil some to keep on hand also. I've only been eating a piece of toast & milk for breakfast since I'm not much of a breakfast eater. Smile

Progresso light soups, I especially love the Southwestern flavored one with a spoonful of fat free sour cream in it.

Fuji apples

a smallbanana with a few chocolate chips and a bit of peanut butter

blueberries or blackberries with a dab of light cool whip mixed in

microwaved can of diced tomatoes with italian seasoning with a little of your fave cheese shredded on top

celery, carrots, cucumbers dipped in fat free ranch

Actually, rgupta19, you're totally right about eggs being an awesome snack, but just to add...

The yolk of the egg contains 50 calories and all of the cholesterol while the whites hover around 17 calories and contain almost all of the protein!  So now you can feel even better about chowing down on those hard boiled whites!!

Baby spinach! I add it to almost everything and always make sure its on hand!Pasta sauces & stir fries (cooked), Sandwiches & Base for my salads (raw),

Also salsa - everything tastes good with salsa! So low cal too!

Herbal fruit teas - FREE from calories and I like it as much as calorie loaded juice!

Cucumbers - I just love raw slices of cucumbers! On their own, in salads, or on sandwiches! With a pinch of salt they are a great potato chip substitute - but the salt is not a requirement!

edit: did I just say cucumbers were as good as potato chips?!?! Wow!?

Egg beaters! I loveeee egg beaters. And steamed veggies too!

Turkey slices are also really low in calories.

Sugar free/fat free Jello (I make my own out of the box) with an apple chopped up and mixed in and a dallop of coolwhip free!  Fills me up at the end the day!

I eat an unlimited amount of vegetables except for corn, potatoes, peas, yams (all the starchy veggies).... and I also eat Nori, Tomato Paste & Kelp Noodles in unlimited amounts because they are both low-calorie & very healthy!

One of my all time favorite snacks in cabbage dipped in tomato paste (or olive tapenade) - ha ha!

#17 yogini_om Jul 23 2008 12:09

yummm sweet potatoes (especially with smart balance light butter)! ..and cukes, cherry tomatoes, grapes, apples, pears(!)..

i love making up a leafy salad with cukes and tomatoes and some chunk light tuna or canned low-cal salmon thrown in, and a tblsp or 2 of some low cal balsamic vinaigrette - fills me up like whoa and hovers at or below 200 cals!

#18 gozalien Jul 24 2008 04:47

The egg white is about 15 calories per egg not 50.  If you can stomach to fill up on them you probably can.  I would suggest limiting your amount of some kind of normal food.  Don't just sit around eating a bunch of food....you are training your body to take in mass quantities...when you do eat unhealthy you are going to shovel it in.

That's an interesting thought David.  I never binge eat but I get your point. I've just been feeling like I'm not eating enough of the right food so I want to learn to fill up on the right stuff. I will make sure it's still the right quantities though.  Thanks.

hummus i eat is 35 calories for 2 tablespoons and  usually eat 3-4 serving with a serving of baby carrots. not incredibly high. 175 at most. but i guess it depends on if you consider that high calorie and how many calories you have left for the day.
