Food Hangover? member76
  Jul 21 2008 18:38

Does anyone else get a nasty sort of "hungover" feeling the day after a bad bingey day? I ate around 3000 calories yesterday (Was aiming for 1600 Cry) and today I don't jusy feel incredibly guilty, I also feel lethargic and tired. By rights I should have MORE energy since I ate a lot yesterday but I feel terrible. Is it possible I'm coming down from a "sugar rush"? It was mainly sweets and carbs I pigged out on.

Wow, thanks for directing me to that. I never thought to search for "food hangover" in the older posts because it seemed like such a ridiculous term, but someone else did actually say it!

Original Post by bugsylover:

i know! it's a very unpleasant feeling. i had forgotten about it along with the whole being hot and sweaty in the night thing and not being able to sleep. and not being able to move in my bed from feeling soo stuffed. hah errghh, yuck. i really want to stop bingeing forever and ever and ever.

This describes exactly how I feel after a binge too. I hate the fact that there is nobody to blame for my binging other than myself. It's one of the few scenarios in my life where I'm literally the ONLY one who can control it and yet it's just too too hard.

I guess it all depends on what you binged on, and how "clean" your diet normally is. I eat a very clean diet..nothing processed, 100% organic and fresh. If i even have a piece of greasy pizza or something fried, my body is very angry with me the next day. There are just somethings you shouldn't eat, even if they're oh so good. But if you binged on somewhat healthy things you shouldn't feel so terrible. As for the lethargy, since you did eat more than usual your body is in super digestion mode which can make you a little tired. Do a mini detox for a couple of days-only fresh veggies, whole grains, and lots of fruit and water-you should feel better after that!

My friend who was in a weight management program told me that when we did that, they "made" her eat broccoli and boiled chicken for the next two days and that was like a detox.

But I KNOW what you mean about the guilt.  I get up in the morning really excited about doing well for the day and then I'm in a company meeting and they bring in deli sandwiches and my personal weakness - potato chips.  I poke my lip out and realize I'm already going to fail that day.

To make matters worse, if there are packages left over, I take them and hide them in my office.  We don't have potato chips at home ever.  My husband and my two teenaged daughters don't have problems with food like I do.

I'm new to this website.  But I'm excited and hope that I can be true to myself and I really like the accountability of adding to the food list.  I hope I can do it.

I use the term food hangover alot... it usually happens when I eat a lot of starchy stuff like pasta and sushi.
