5 lbs & 1" in 3 months - can I do this, and how? hettyanne

My work has instigated a weight loss challenge, and I've signed up to lose 5 lbs over 3 months and 1" on my waist.

I am currently only 115 lbs and 5'3", however many of my colleagues have a lot more to lose and felt it important I support them along the way, and lose a bit for myself as well. The Registered Nurse suggested I could get down as far as 105 and look great. 110 would be fine with me, therefore I made it my goal, in addition to losing an inch off of my waist.

Realizing I don't have a lot to lose, I wonder if you folks might offer some suggestions.  I am verrryyyy slow at losing weight - although I've knocked off about 6 - 7 lbs over the course of the last 6 months. I get distracted by social outings easily and eat / drink too much on weekends (and I am working to fix this!) however if someone my size had a 'fool proof plan', I'd be forever indebted to hear it.

Much love, and happy Monday.

Heather

To lose 5lbs in 3 months, you would need an average deficit of 200 calories a day or 1400 calories in a week.

How many calories do you typically burn in a day?

As for losing 1" off your waist, it sounds feasible.  Just be sure to eat mostly healthy meals and include weight lifting into your workout routine.

What is your current exercise regime?

I burn (on sedentary) 1550 cals a day. I try to add at least 200 - 300 to my burn meter by walking / jogging / home calestenics / golf / yard work / etc. I don't go to the gym however get outside a lot. I usually eat between 1,200 - 1,400 cals a day on good days, and then something completely ridiculous on days where I have to be social.

I'd really love to try and lose the 5 in less time than 3 months, and then learn to maintain inin the time remaining.

Sounds to me like the social thing is your first obstacle. Alcohol has a lot of calories, and so does eating at restaurants. I'm trying to learn to overcome this too. It's kinda awkward watching your friends eat burgers at Applebees while you drink a diet coke as I've found. But today we went to subway, and I got a 350 cal sub (read the fine print on their info thing) and was able to enjoy it.. erm.. socially just as much.

Anyway, try to think of what you will order, or how much you will allow yourself to drink before you go out, then you won't get caught up in all the fun. This seems to work for me, as long as you can stay persistent.

I'm wondering why you feel the need to lose weight in the first place. 115 pounds at 5' 3"- you're already pretty tiny! I should know, I'm 5' 4" and 133 and I feel pretty tiny. Perhaps you're not satisfied with the tone of your body or your physical fitness, and a simple exercise regime should help with that. But do you really need to lose 5 pounds just because your office is having a competition?
