Pain during weight loss? janinama
  Jul 21 2008 01:40

Hi,

(21 year old female)

Over the last two weeks I've totally changed my diet. I used to eat everything, mostly unhealthy greasy things. Luckily I have a fast metabolism, and am at an okay weight. (I'm 5'7'' 122lbs). The main reason I chose to change my diet was because of the negative effects it has on me. For the passed year my body has been heavily revolting against these foods. If I eat anything remotely greasy, my stomach hurts for hours. I'll instantly bloat like a balloon for the next 24 hours and feel tremendously uncomfortable.

So, I've kept a very, very healthy diet for the past two weeks (especially comparing it to what it was). I just dropped those habits from one day to the next, and thus have lost some weight. (From 126 to 122). Anyway, to get to my question, does anyone get any painful symptoms to weight loss? I accidentally ate a soup yesterday with onions in it (which bloat me) and felt horrible. I woke up this morning, thinking the bloating went to my right side, but realized throughout the day that it's not bloating. It's some sort of pressure pain under the right side of my ribs. It's been going on ALL DAY and my shoulder and arm is even sore. It's the strangest thing, and it has got to be related to my new eating habits (I eat about 1300 calories a day).

I'm enjoying my new eating lifestyle, with more energy and motivation. Has anyone experienced such a thing? It's extremely aggravating, and I don't think I can exercise like this. I will go to the doctor if it continues until tomorrow, but in the meantime does anyone have any thoughts as to what it could be? Is it weigh loss related?

Thanks,

J

You might want to be tested for food allergy.  It's not fun but if you've got foods that are problematic, you'll feel MUCH better once you find out what they are.  Eggs, Dairy, & nuts are the most common BTW.  You might try cutting those out of your diet for a while and see if your symptoms disappear.

That's a good idea... my friend was just telling me that there is a common allergic reaction people have to wheat products (which I've just started eating more of), so that could be it as well.

Thank you guys for your help! I hope this goes away soon :-(

You also need to get checked for gallbladder attack -- those are classic symptoms (you're young, but I was only 26 when I had my attack)

have you just recently started eating the "Eating Right" crisps (perhaps as a substitute to your normal "greasy food"?). if so, my money's on them causing your bloating - i had a horrible experience with them. and once your digestion's backed up, the pain can be felt in a variety of places. as far as your arm and shoulder hurting, your body might be compensating during the night to relieve the pressure under your ribs and in turn putting abnormal stress on your arm.

basically, i would cut out anything new that you've added to your diet (it also strikes me that you're eating a lot of dairy, which doesn't always sit right with people), wait two days for your body to respond (on average, food takes two days to leave the body), and see a doctor if you haven't noticed any improvement.

hope all turns out well, and best of luck on your new healthy habits!

Being at a low weight and having a fast metabolism are not the same thing.  It seems like your weight may be low as a consequence of not eating very much, which actually SLOWS your metabolism.  1300 calories is low low low for someone your height, especially if you do anything besides sleep all day, which I'm assuming you do? So, it may also be possible that your metabolism is not fast and that you're experiencing difficulties with digestion as a consequence of a slow metabolism related to undereating.  I would suggest eating more (especially more protein and healthy fats) and letting your metabolism actually kick back into gear.

I agree, I'm 21 and Im having mine removed (theres a long history of diseased gallbladders in my family on the female side), not to worry you but it wouldn't hurt to check it out. Pay close attention to what you eat and how you feel afterwards, I know if I have anything remotely fatty (mostly animal fats-cheese, red meat (even if its lean) and chicken) I get pretty bad pain in my upper right side that radiates up my shoulder...not to mention the nausea and frequent bowel movements (sorry). Its good to be proactive, listen to your body and take care of things before they get worse.

I have the same problem when I eat really clean for an extended period, then I eat something with fat!  I did the raw food diet for a few months and after awhile it really took a toll on my health.  Perhaps I didn't do it right, but I ate nothing but raw fruits, veggies, and nuts!  I was pretty malnourished, and I looked pretty gaunt.  As for adding fat back into my diet, it really upset my tummy.

By looking at your diet I have a few possible suggestions...

Perhaps you could be lactose intolerant???  You have a lot of dairy in your diet.  Cheese and stuff like that cause bloating for me.

It could also be due to acidic foods and fruits.  Too much acid in your diet could irritate your stomach.
