HRM and water? mkculs
  Jul 20 2008 03:51

Do heart rate monitors generally work in water? I'm going to a waterpark this week and was thinking about wearing it to see what I burn with all the walking/stairs. I'm just curious about how much I will be burning. My HRM is the Nike Imara (I-momma, as I think of it) and I'll be looking for info online, but I'm pretty sure that in the booklet I didn't see anything about use in the water.

TIA.

edit: it's water resistant but I don't see anything saying if it works properly in water. I assume that if I fell in a lake when running and didn't sink below 50 meters, it would not suffer water damage. . .

Water resistant generally means it can take being sweated on and being used in the rain, but swimming is right out; for that you need waterproof.

But even then, do they work in a pool or do swimmers have to get something else?

Water proof works in the pool - at least, Coach_K's waterproof HRM does, as long as you don't push the buttons on the monitor itself. My el cheapo water resistant one says it's "water resistant to 1m depth" which I basically take to mean that it won't electrocute me when I sweat while working out, but swimming with it on is pushing it.

Thanks. I know that "water resistant" and "water proof" are two different things, but I wasn't sure if the electronic transmission worked in water. I'll have to see if the Polar F6 is substantially different from the Imara.

I wear my F4 and F6 both swimming.  Never exercise without them!

I believe water resistant means you can swim but not DEEP SEA DIVING or SCUBA diving LOL.  It should say on the back of the wrist part how deep.....eg. 30 m!
