I wasnt very athletic as a kid although I was always thin/average.
Between 3rd and 6th grades, I would always skip lunch to help my teachers with errands.
So that means, every SINGLE school-day between ages 8/9 to 11/12 I would eat nothing until around 3:30.
I've never eaten breakfast regularly. (I cannot remember a time when i havent felt nauseous after eating something before 11 AM).
At that time, I have a feeling my body went into Starvation Mode until 3:30 (Essentially, I would come home from school and binge on junk food until dinner time). However, I wasnt overweight or anything. I was relatively thin (but not chronically. Just average).
In 7th grade, I got into a 7-12 high school, with an open campus. All my friends always go out for lunch, so these past two years (7th and 8th grades), I actually EAT lunch.
Well, I guess i'd call it "brunch", since eating before 11 AM still makes me nauseous, so I skip my breakfast.
But, lately its been alot harder for me to maintain my weight.
I'm 104 this July, but I was 96 in the beginning of June. O____o
(i think I just binged when school let out in the beginning of June..)
I've never actually watched my weight, because I've never had a problem with it. Now I'm beginning to get worried.
I'm on the REALLY REALLY REALLY short side. I'm 5'0 *SIIGH* all my friends are just Giants. I'm usually likened to an 11 year old (getting into theatres with the reduced child fare makes my friends seethe in jealousy though).
I've never been athletic when I was younger (i SUUUUCK at running. my school is near Central Park in NYC, so my gym teacher makes us run around the reservoir, and we're tested to run a mile within 9 minutes. and it always takes me 5 more minutes. SOO embarressing). But this summer I signed up for a Gym Membership, and since Monday the 14th I've been going everyday for an hour and a half. I'm hoping to get better at running, so that I wont be so embarressed on the tests (although no one cares, because they dont have huge expectations out of me since im short).
This brings me to the burn counter. I usually go on the elliptical for 30 minutes, the bike for 20, and then the elliptical again. Everyday, my goal is to burn 250 calories. With the best of my ability thus far, thats as much as I can do within an hour and a half. On the Activities; Elliptical, they have things set at "377 calories per hour" when on light activity.
but i can only do 220 calories in an hour, at my best so far! =[
I dont think its right that they have things set like that.
At my gym, you have to put in your age and weight, which will calculate # of burned calories on the moniter screen. People who are heavier and older burn calories easier than people who are younger and lighter. It makes me feel like such a failure when i see the CC.com stats!! D:
I think my metabolism got screwed up those years between 3rd and 6th grades. I remember always feeling alot of hunger in the pit of my stomache at those times, but those cafeteria ladies at my elementary school wouldnt let you in too late if you arent with your whole class, and I had loved being a teachers pet anyway. *sigh* i really regret it, I think it screwed up my metabolism.
i'm only 5 feet, and i really really want to grow taller (i wish to be at LEAST 5'2, but i dont think thatll EVER happen. my parents are mad short anyway..)
I also want to go back to my original weight which was around 92 this summer. But I dont really care much about losing weight as I do GETTING TALLER. I just really want to get taller =[
My school is 60% oriental asian, and 33% percent caucasian. (I'd be apart of 6.9% "other" because i'm south-asian). it really annoys me to see some oriental asian people pig out and eat over 1,200 calories just for lunch, and still stay 5'2 and 86. like, seriouslyyy mann. =.= they can eat alll they want, run ultra-duperr fast, look nice, and stay thin.
*sigh*
any comments/suggestions?
1. You're 14. You may or may not get any taller (I'm 5'1", and the last 2 inches crept up slowly sometime after the age of 13). You are not, however, fully mature.
2. You do yourself no favors by judging yourself in comparison to other people. They are different; you are you. Don't try to match yourself with them; it's apples and oranges.
3. You are at a healthy weight right now; you just need to get in shape. As you do that, you may actually GAIN weight, as you build muscle. This is not a bad thing.
4. If you try to force yourself back to 96 pounds, you will be at the edge of underweight. If, as you hope, you become taller, you *will* be underweight. This is no better for you than being overweight. I was 95 lbs. until I was almost 30; it's only looking back that I realize how that affected my health.
well you wanna be taller?
get your DV of calcium everyday
get enough sleep
that's all i got. lol. i wish i were taller too (5'3) but my doc says im done growing (creep :( )
im somewhat unsure of the point of your post. it seems to jump around a bit. however, i can't express how important it is not to skip meals. you seem to already know why ( you binge when you get home, etc etc), and yes it will affect your metabolism overtime.
i agree with everything axeljudge said. you don't neccesarily need to lose weight, you just need to get in shape
If you DO want to lose weight (which i really don't think you need to, or you'll be bordering on underweight), find out how many calories you need each day to maintain your weight. (should be b/t 1800-2100 or somethin around there)
then subtract 500 calories from that number and make that your goal each day. either you can cut 500 calories from your diet on just food alone, or your could cut 250 by food and burn 250 at the gym. regardless of what you do you should go to the gym, maybe play a co-ed rec sport (cute guys, no althletic talent involved), chase taxi cabs. somethin to keep you active.
You might grow another inch or two, depending on how old you were when you started your period. They say you stop growing about a year after you start, but I don't know how true that is, since I was 13 when mine started, and I was 5'4" then, and now I'm 5'7". I don't think I grew 3 inches in one year, but maybe two inches and then a half inch the next two years.
Don't worry about your weight too much. You shouldn't be trying to 'maintain'! You're in the process of maturing and that might mean gaining weight. I gained 30 pounds (!) between the ages of 13 and 15, going from 88 to 118 pounds. BUT, I also grew those last 3 inches and filled out, so I looked less like a little kid and more like a young woman. For now, just enjoy being 14 and don't stress about your body. Love is for what it is and concentrate on just eating healthy - and eating enough - so you can get your extra couple inches!
When you were a kid? Honey, you're still a kid and you're still growing. I grew another inch after I was 16. Your weight is supposed to increase because you are growing. By no means should you be trying to maintain your childhood weight. For one thing, your bones are supposed to be getting denser and heavier. If they don't grow properly now, you'll be plagued by osteoporosis as an adult. Your internal organs are still developing as is your brain. You need good nutrition to be a strong, vital adult. Don't thwart natural, normal growth because of some false ideal you see in other people. This is your only chance to grow a healthy body. We don't get a second chance when we're older and showing signs of disease.
You have a misconception about what "starvation mode" is. We don't reach this metabolic condition for part of a day. It's a long term problem caused by undereating over the course of months, not one day.
You should keep in mind that the tools at CC are for adults. The BMI tool, for instance is inaccurate for anyone under the age of 20, and the Burn and Eat meters are also wrong for young teens. Here are some links to sites that might help you understand that you don't need to lose weight, and really should gain weight to be healthy.
Daaahhhling, I just wanted to say that height gain [lol] is not impossible--I'd always been told that girls stop growing in height two years after they begin menstruating, but I got my period when I was in 6th grade and from my freshman year to this summer [I'm gonna be a senior], I went from 5'2" to 5'5". Your weight gain is normal and necessary, especially if you expect to increase in height! I don't suggest you try to lose any weight unless you're overweight, or borderline overweight. But you seem to have a healthy grip on everything so just keep eating right and don't worry about a thing!
First of all, you are at a perfectly normal weight for your height! I think it's great that you are going to the gym, but let it be to get strong and lean, not lose weight. However, the problem about being short (I'm 5' .5") is that you simply need a little less food than tall people. Try eating about 1800 calories if you want to bother counting at all. And I'll cross my fingers that we both miraculously grow a few inches :)
firs of all DONT LOSE weight! you are all ready tiny! and second i have metabolism issues as well due to eating issues, and it makes me mad and terified! just try and realize the only way to fix it is actually eat more, and everything will work its self out, life isnt about food and weight!
