Serious Addiction .... TO CEREAL!! sugarplum87
  Jul 19 2008 02:50

I promise myself every time that I go to the grocery store that I am NOT going to buy cereal because I know once I open that box, I am going to finish it down to the last flake in the SAME sitting!

But when I walk down the cereal aisle each time, all of the colorful boxes look so pretty and tempting, and I always end up buying some anyway!

Sure enough, when I got home today from Trader Joes, I opened up my cereal box (High Fiber Fruit & Nut Multigrain Medley), and I finished the box in under an hour. Even though there are only 90 calories per serving, there are 13 servings in a box! And 8g of sugar per serving!! UGH.

I know I just shouldn't buy the stuff, but I love cereal SO much! PLEASE, does anyone have some really good advice on portion control for cereal? I am desperate!!

drink 2 pints of water before you eat

this might not be what you want to hear....

but is doesn't sound like a good idea to be eating any cereal at all.

Sugar is very addictive.  I know I used to approach things like this like...
"this time will be different, I'll eat like a normal person, I don't want to deprive myself" but it's just like a crack addict saying - "I want just a little bit of crack, and then I'll save the rest for next week..."

It's not for everyone, but for the last 8+ years I've been in FA (foodaddicts.org)
That has helped enormously.

It's a lot easier to not eat sugar than to have to wrestle with it over and over....(and the self disgust that comes from losing that battle)

good luck!

You can always just "accept the things you cannot change." One day/week at about 1300 calories, all cereal, and then whatever else you eat. Not the best plan, but one that might actually work :)

Or, just buy the single-serving boxes. Maybe the portion control will help.

Or, don't go down that aisle in the store.

Or, maybe someone else could do the grocery shopping (unless that person, like my husband, has no weight issues and will bring home whatever he wants . . . )

Just some ideas. I'd probably start with #1 myself and try to work up to #3.

Good luck!

So buy the single-serve boxes! They cost more than big ones, but if you're going to eat a whole box in a day anyway, it's not going to make a difference! Or else try putting your cereal into an airtight jar as soon as you buy it and dishing it out with a cup measure ONE CUP at a time, then put the rest of the bottle away in the cupboard and do NOT get it out again.

omg i love cereal aswell!!!! try to tell ur self to have some later and that you dont have to finish the whole box. stop when u feel full because as soon as u go overboard ur weight will also in crease hope this helps xD

I think kajikit has the right idea here. I normally don't buy single servings as they cost more and you're paying for the packaging, which creates extra waste. But we all have our poisons (mine is ice cream). I have trouble portioning that out without sneaking some extra tastes (or 5). So, I buy single portions and only pull one out if I have a craving. Give it a shot next time you shop and see if that helps.

Good luck!!

If you absolutely need that wonderful cereal crunch, I would recommend Crispex- no white sugar added. I believe it has a B rating on this site, so you would get to enjoy a food you love, without so much of the guilt.

Eh hem.... Excuse me while I introduce myself as a one time cereal addict...

Yep. One year of binging, yo-yo dieting, all in the name of cereal? Better believe it hun. I had to give it up... I was such a cereal freak, I'd eat it for breakfast, lunch, dinner--as snacks, in sandwiches, on ice cream.. yah you know it I've done it.

I'm now recovered as a plain oatmeal fan. I only eat oatmeal when someone else controls how I get it (ex. friend's house, my mom's house, cafeteria). I don't trust myself... and the dumb boxes? Never worked. I'd eat my way through any sort of "single serving" I had. It's a sad sad world...

I am also a cereal addict, but I can't stop buying it because it's such a good breakfast - quick and nutritious.  What I do is buy a cereal that you don't want to eat straight out of the box, like grape nuts.  That way I can still eat it for breakfast, but I'm not tempted at night to just reach in a grab a few handfuls.  I've definitely finished whole boxes that way.

Or, just don't buy it.  That's what I had to do with peanut butter (RIP) and crusty bread (also, RIP).

i have the exact same problem, at the sight of it, i just have to eat it.  seriously though, stop buying, just live w/o it because you can't have one serving, just forget about it.

Cereal is easliy my biggest weakness. That stuff's just too densely packed with calories and it's not very filling per serving. I have to stay away from it altogether.

i know...doesn't it just suck? i hate cereal because it's so addicting. basically i would just say do not buy it. i wish i could go w/o cereal in my house, but my family eats it and they can stop after a reasonable amount. i try to ignore it, but sometimes i just eat it because it's there. oh well. i think oatmeal is a better option at least for me because once one packet is gone i'm done. plus it takes time to make...cereal you can just open and eat and eat.
#14 ka2007 Jul 21 2008 21:06

ahh so i am not the only one who buys a box of cereal with good intentions, and finishes it in one or two sittings.

#15 ka2007 Jul 21 2008 21:06

PS at this moment, i am not buying any, i only buy yogurt with cereal so i get the benefits but not the dangerous big box:)

#16 krismart Jul 25 2008 02:21

I'm right there with you.

I used to completely stay away from cereal, which was part of an ED. Now that I let myself eat what I want, I can't seem to put a box of it down once I start. I try to buy healthy cereals and limit my portions, but it's such a vice of mine.

I'm going to try out buying the individual portions, mostly Cherrios and Total...maybe a couple sugary ceareals as an indulgent dessert.

Good luck!

Hi everyone! My name is Vyper and I am addicted to Fruity Pebbles, and Raisin Bran Crunch. I have been clean for three hours and counting. Right now, I have the urge. I might give in tonight...... :)
Cereal is like Jesus......if He were to turn into a crunchy tastey thing we'd like to eat hahaha
(thats a joke....not how tastey cereal is but about Jesus. I didnt consider others' religio before i rote that but i dont want to delete it either)

#18 nycgirl Jul 26 2008 05:28

I do. Puffins are my weakness. I can kill a box in one sitting easy. Same with Corn Flakes, Cheerios etc. Now I only buy cereal such as Fiber One etc. And though I do munch on it, I cannot eat more than a cup or so at one time.
