| Are my deli sandwiches healthy? | ||

Is there something wrong with eating at least one sandwich every day? I usually get them from deli's, and I definitely allocate them into my calories.

Hi drums,
I don't think having a sandwich a day is a problem if you're eating other foods and getting a good nutritional balance. It actually sounds kinda good with all the hot weather. :) I'm not sure what the rest of your day looks like or if you have any specific health issues, but the only things that might make your sandwich listed above less than healthy would be the turkey (high in sodium) and the havarti cheese (one of my faves, but one of the highest in fat and the deli typically uses 1.5-2 servings, so you might be getting 21-28g of fat in the cheese alone). Otherwise, the whole wheat bread, veggies, and mustard are all pretty good for you, especially if you can get some non-iceberg lettuce with more vitamins. Maybe people will post the nutritional values of some other sandwiches for you. I like hummus with mustard and lots of veggies on a whole wheat, high fiber pita or wrap, personally. :D |

Deli sandwiches aren't intrinsically unhealthy. The problem with all catered food, however, is that you can't easily work out what calories are in it. An ounce of bread is 70 cals, for example. So do you know if it contains 2oz, 3oz, 4oz bread? And harvarti cheese is 110 cals per ounce so again, are they adding 1oz, 2oz, half an ounce? Even when restaurants publish calorie-counts, they're often not very accurate.
If you make a sandwich, on the other hand, then you know exactly what's in it. So, as a general tip for weight-loss, try to make/prepare your own food as much as possible. |

As long as they don't pile on the cheese and the sandwich isn't huge (like a footlong sub) then that sounds like a great sandwich for lunch. Turkey is a healthy lean meat, whole wheat bread is great for you, plus some veggies on top makes it a nice meal that you shouldn't feel guilty about. |

Yes, turkey is a healthy lean meat but DELI turkey is sometimes loaded with sodium and fillers that make it a questionable choice.
I find take-out sandwiches are surprisingly high in calories (like 600-900!) so I'd way rather make my own. |
