Just remember, it's for your health...

I have recently been advised to cut out dairy after I noticed it was making stomach problems worse. Quite happy to make the switch, in fact!... Until I realised how poor quality most of the soy cheese I find is. Good God, I miss brie, but I can live without it.

However, I know there is one thing I would not be able to live without. Oats. Porridge. Flapjacks. Crumbles. If I ever turn out to have a gluten or oat allergy/intolerance I will die a little inside. ;[

The question is simple: What is the one thing you would never want give up to an allergy/intolerance? (Or is there something you've had to give up already?)

I never would have thought I would, but I gave up peanut butter about three months ago.  I started breaking out bad all of a sudden, and cut a bunch of stuff out of my diet and then added things back one at a time, and it was my beloved pb that was causing it.  For the most part I just replaced it with sunflower seed butter but that means never another reeces for me :(

My family also went non-dairy for a while when I was a kid, (my brother has to for intollerance reasons) and that was hard for me, but you get used to the soy/rice replacements after a while.

cfh1027: Aww. :[ I don't like Reeces, personally - waaay too sickly. ><

I don't even mind the soy/rice replacements for most things, but... we don't seem to have a lot of varying soy cheeses in the stores I can find it in, and they're like coloured wood blocks when I do. Bleck.

Ooh, interesting topic!

Actually, I can't imagine giving up dairy.  Milk, yogurt, cottage cheese... all dietary staples for me.  I've tried soy alternatives, and YUK!  Just not the same for me.

And... tomatoes!  Oh, I could never live without tomatoes.  Raw and fresh, sliced on a sandwich, homemade minestrone, homemade marinara, pico de gallo, salsa...

Darnit, everytime I come to the Foods forum, I get hungry.  I think I'll go have a glass of milk on your behalf.  ;)

Beckabooey: WHY MUST YOU TORTURE ME SO ;__;

Tomatoes! I have to agree there too. Can't beat sliced tomatoes with mozzarella and basil... when I could eat mozzarella, anyway. Aaaugh. Though, I've never known anyone to have a tomato allergy. o___o

Fat.
I have to do it too with IBS
Ok not totally cut it out, but drastically reduce, but even nuts make me sick if i eat a handful

With everything else there's a substitutes
Oats - gluten free-oats, or if its oat, rice porridge, quinoa flakes, quinoa, bulgur etc.
Wheat - I love getting variety already, so no problems
dairy - i CHOSE soy milk over dairy and dont like cheese. JUst cottage cheese :D but i could learn to love other stuff.

red_herring: There is a light at the end of the tunnel should I ever have to give up oats! Haha, seriously though, I love them. I eat porridge every day at breakfast varied with different toppings. Screw the weetabix week, I have the porridge week. :B
