Ok, so after reading so much about the wonders of strength training, I decided to have a go. I found a programme which looks about right, but now I have a problem. It's for beginners, so most of it (to begin with) is just using bodyweight, but a couple of the exercises require 'light dumbbells'. I don't own any real weights, or have access to a gym, so here's my question:
What would you class as 'light' weights?
And any suggestions as to what I could use?
Thanks!
Anything from a normal can of veggies to a half-gallon of liquid. Various jugs with handles work ok. I have two clothes detergent jugs filled with water that come out to about 6 lbs each.
It just means whatever is light to you. Doesn't have to be dumb bells at all. Jenningermany had some good ideas. I have used old vinegar bottles filled with sand way back when I first started. Old milkjugs with water then upgrade to sand when you need a heavier weight. There is tons of stuff to use...just get creative.
""Light" is completely relative", yeah, that makes sense. So, I just need to experiment and find a weight that works for me? I can do that.
*Goes to dig for lift-able objects*
Thanks guys!
I saw a good suggestion for choosing the right amount of weight on the Bob Greene site. If you cannot do 8 reps, it is too heavy. If you can do 12 reps and feel like you could keep going, it is too light. You then experiment with different amounts of weight to find the one that falls in the 8-12 range and then you will have the right amount for you.
