Fish Oil Capsules--say what??? ehp1975
  Jul 18 2008 01:38

Can anyone fill me in on exactly what these fish oil capsules are, what they are supposed to do, and what they are made of?  Are they really just filled with fish oil?  If someone could give me the low down on these things, I'd love to hear about them.  Thanks!!

Fish oil are omega 3 and omega 6 vitamins.  I personally would just go with eating fish once a week or even using real flax seed oil or milled flax seed to get the omega's.

Personally I find if I use supplements vs eating "right" and real foods you really don't get the full benefits of the food.

You might want to post this question in the foods section for more input.

Omega's are good for reducing bad cholesterol and bringing up the good.  If you use the real stuff like the flax seed oil or milled flax seed it also helps keep the gastrointestinal tract on "track"

This statement is correct, but it needs to be slightly tempered with more information.  Omega 6's are only healthy when they are in a low ratio to Omega 3's. (4:1 Omega 6 to Omega 3 is considered optimal)

If the ratio is higher, Omega 6s interfere with the health benefits of Omega 3s because they both compete for the same enzymes within the body and Omega 6s will win, leaving the Omega 3s to be unable to be processed

ive heard basically the same things these people have said.....i personally do not like eating fish ...so i recently started taking  these omegas  but all i hear is  good things

fish oil usage may: lower high blood pressure, reduce the risk of heart attacks, may reduce sudden death by improving cardiovascular health, alleviate arthritis aches and pains, and may boost the health of the brain, which is comprised of significant percentages of DHA and EPA omega 3 fatty acids found in fish oil .....

i neeed a boost of health to the brain too lol  im only on week 2 so havent noticed difference yet

Fish oil is good for several reasons, but they may have high levels of toxins.  You have to be very careful about not consuming the toxins.  Do some research on the brands.

On a personal note, I like to take them the night before a jog right before I sleep.  I wake up feeling fantastic.  They say it helps nuerological health and may help ease depression.

Edit: It really is best to try to eat a food with those nutrients, but sometimes it can be difficult to do that (price, time to cook, fitting the calories into the diet).  The fish that have it are mackerel, flounder, albacore tuna and salmon.

google it. google omega 3-6-9. read the wiki entries on EFA

there are blends that contain seed oils and fish oils... you may burp salmon scent if you get plain old fish oil. apparently freezing them eases this side efffect but that sounds too much like work to me.

i take 1-3 grams per day depending on what i have eaten. I find i am a fussy eater and won't consume fish every day, more like once a week, so this works well for me. 10 calories per capsule apparently, so keep that in mind. i tend to think it's higher, as most oils ring in at 25 per gram... but whatever.

trying an omega 3-6-9 blend can't hurt, unless you are on a steady diet of flax crusted salmon you cook in borage oil or some ridiculous thing :)
