I have been logging all my foods for a while and I try to keep my vitamins up and fat down. Lately, however, I have had my eye on this calcium thing...no matter how well I think I do for the day as far as a balanced diet, my calcium never goes above 50%. I know that I need it for healthy bones etc. Is this a problem? If so, any solutions? I eat yogurt and fat free cottage cheese (along with the occasional bowl of ice cream). What's up??
Take a woman's multi vitamin, many have about 500mg of calcium in them. You also need to watch your vitamin D and magnesium in take. Magnesium is not very high in animal products, so supplement that as well, if you are mostly relying on milk or cheese. Sesame seeds have an awesome amount of calcium in them. I'm a huge believer in vitamin supplements, its really hard getting all the vitamins and minerals in on 1500 calorie diet.
You are not kidding. It's hard enough getting the right vitamins! Thank you for your quick reply. I am starting the supplements right away!! I did hear that they give you "digestive issues" but that was just one person. To me, the calcium is much more important. Thanks!!
A good solid multivitamin will help and I think it's a must for anyone on a calorie restriction. If you're not eating everything in sight, chances are that some thing in your diet will suffer.
I used to worry about the same and couldnt stomach too much milk and cheese was too fattening. I have discovered fortified soy milk. It has 30% calcium in a cup with only 70 calories- i end up drinking 1.5 cups of that in the day with cereal/tea/coffee. Pair that with some yogurt/beans/lentil and you're good to go. Do take a multivitamin though.
Also I have read that eating too much animal based protein leaches the calcium out of your bones so just something to keep in mind. Hope this helps!
