Stress and Anxiety killing my appetite

Quote  |  Reply

I'm going through some personal stuff right now and the past few days Ive had barely over 1000 cals, and I usually eat between 1450-1600. This is not good at all. I'm very stressed out and the anxiety is making my stomach very upset and i can't seem to shake it enough to eat some food. Any advice to help calm my nerves and get some food in me?! (never thought i'd say that)

When i have problems like this I turn to peanut butter. It goes down easy and boosts my calories fast, with very little effect on the knotting stomach. From past experience not eating only made the anxiety worse, but distracting myself helps. Movies books activities.

you may want to try St John's Wort for the anxiety.

I have been on Xanax since mom died. It takes the edge off without making me a zombie

Instead of eating your calories, try drinking them...

2 T Hershey Sugar Free Syrup (15 calories)

1 c. Vanilla Almond Breeze  (90 calories)

1 scoop of this - http://www.bodybuilding.com/store/mt/tech.htm l (110 calories)

1 c. frozen cherries (210 calories) or 1 c. frozen strawberries (77 calories)

That's 392 calories right there.  It's a good source of protien and contains a good mix of nutrients. See if a fairly decadent shake doesn't make it easier to get something in your stomach.  I find that once I start eating again that the "edge" comes off the anxiety, too.

I agree with both the peanut butter and the smoothie ideas.  I like making smoothies with kefir (liquid yoghurt) and frozen bananas and a bit of vanilla syrup.  It's an instant 300 calories and will calm your stomach.

I did pose a question about loss of appetite to Ask Mary, but it seems to have been passed up.  I'm going through a separation and have good weeks and horrific weeks.

Another thing I do when I know I'll be low on nutrients is to have Emergen-C, a fizzy vitamin packet you add to water.

I have had same problem this week, thought it might be flu, but think it more likely to be stress on job.  I think the drinking cals is good idea 2 times a day then fish or light salad at night.  And keep in mind  this to will pass.

I always turn to oatmeal when I'm not feeling great.  Even if it feels like you don't want the food something simple might settle your  stomach

Just a word of caution with this.  If you happen to be on birth control then do NOT take St John's Wort, it will counteract the medication.  Always check with your doctor or pharmacist before adding any herbal supplements.

Sorry about your mom. It's been almost three years since I lost mine. It gets a little easier

I'm on Xanax too but for other issues. I'm a total zombie. You're lucky

what is your dosage? you may want to ask them to lower it but increase how many times a day you take it. I am on the lowest dose (I don't have my bottle with me) and if I need it I can take it 3 times a day. I usually only have to take it twice.

There are also other options besides xanax. you may want to ask for a substitute.

In your case - do not use St John's Wort with Xanax - not a good combo!

- 250ml vodka (550 calories)

It will calm your nerves like no other, plus it'll boost your calories right to where you need them!

... But seriously, I did come on here to say nuts, peanut butter, etc.. but all the good ones were already taken

Ha! So bad but so true.

I'm on .5mg of extended release Xanax. I take one in the morning and two at night. Klonopin and ativan don't work. Valium is just about the same as Xanax. My appetite has bottomed out, too.
