health food store... what to get?

Quote  |  Reply

I'm on vacation staying with some relatives and my aunt is going to take me to a health food store in a little while. I'm really excited but I don't know what to get I was just wondering what are some good, healthy things that you like to get at the health food store? thanks!

I love the array of different grains, dried beans, nuts and seeds etc.  Usually more comprehensive than even the bigger supermarkets.  Beware, however, not everything in a 'health food shop' is all that healthy.  The one on my high street does chocolate and yoghurt-coated dried fruit, those japanese wasabi crackers (lovely but so salty!!) and all kinds of dodgy stuff in packets festooned with E-numbers!

i love health food markets, but as always,  check the labelS!! i always go by the following: carb count,  calories, protein and fiber.  i like to buy food products with high fiber count, low carb, low calories, but higher protein if possible.  my goal these days is fiber, because that helps you feel full longer and it's healthier!

i bought KASHI go lean cereal while on vacatoin, and i love it! it's got a lot of fiber (10mg) for 1 cup serving, so i ate it every day for breakfast.  now im eating it a home, along with ALL BRAN and mixed grain oatmeal (not all at once! haha! i alternate).

look for frozen sprouted breads such as

french meadow bakery: www.frenchmeadow.com

or organic cereals, cheeses, local raw milk, good local fruits

theres also gluten free stuff, waffles, crackers, etc.

i do however recommend you get two things that i love....

hemp seed and extra virgin coconut oil ( its a medium chain staured fat, its been proven to increase metabolism, and aid with immune system, thats right, saturated fat is now good.)

gi-jane: You wouldn't happen to be talking about Julian Graves, would you? ;P

I don't have any specific reccommendations as such, but I agree with gi-jane in checking to see if something is really "healthy"; a really nice looking stem ginger loaf my mum bought me specifically (dairy-free~) turned out to have glucose-fructose syrup as the first ingredient, and didn't get much better thereafter... :[

seaweed, hummus, tofurky jurky, kombucha, almond milk, dark chocolate, baked chips, polenta chips, boca burgers
