| Is my scale playing a dirty trick on me? | ||
| Jul 17 2008 14:57 | ||
So I stepped on the scale this morning last time I weighed myself was Monday and I was at 121.8.....this morning I step on it says 124.4 so of course I step on again...120.8...(.8 away from my goal)....okay still don't believe it so I step on again and it reads 120.8....am I really .8 away or is my scale just being devlish like they all are? I started at 126 and I don't really feel like I've lost almost 5lbs, I can tell I've lost but I thought it would feel, I don't know, different? But anyways...do you think my scale is correct at 120.8? |

Play a dirty trick on your scale - shove it in the corner and let it gather dust for a while. Seriously. Of course, if you really feel the need to weigh more often, keep in mind that scales themselves have inherent variation, as can the weight of your body. Next time, take the first measurement and be done with it. Take the measurement averages over the course of a week to get a better idea of what you've lost. Good luck! |

I know exactly what you mean. If you have a digital scale like me, I step on it once and don't count the first measurement. Then I step on it again and the 2nd one is usually more accurate. Sometimes scales get all messed up when they're just sitting there. |

really? I never thought about it getting messed up, I should try stepping on it twice next time. I hate to be disappointed though....I'm pretty sure it's me, not the scale.
I hate to even look because if i've actually drank all the water I'm supposed to, I'm heavier. AND I'm building muscle from exercise. Looking at the scale makes me feel like I've gotten nowhere. |

Do you feel you look better? It's best to judge weight loss by how you look and how your clothes fit instead of just weight. Usually with me how much I weigh mirrors how I look. When I gain 5 lbs I could definitely notice it... same way when I lose it. But if it comes down to that, try to weigh yourself on another scale like those at the gym and the Doctor's office and compare. Good luck! |

Don't be upset.. my scale is sometimes 6-7 pounds off. The doctor's scale is usually the best. Try just to weigh yourself once a week and write it down and hide the scale till the same day next time. And weigh yourself first thing in the morning. Try measuring yourself.. inches lost is better than any weight measurement. |

All mechanical devices including scales have hysteresis, which is caused by friction. As they age the variations get worse. Unless a digital scale has completely digital innards it will exhibit hysteresis. |

Do you weigh yourself on carpet or other soft surface? That can cause digital scales to be wildly inaccurate. Make sure your scale is on a hard even surface. |

Original Post by jinxozzie: yeah...for sure...my digital scale even has a fit on the bathroom floor (a tiled floor where the tiles are very small and perhaps slightly uneven??)...so I do it in the kitchen. You could try to test it by weighing something like a handweight! |

my weight watchers scale weighs differently first time and second. I always take the second number. I figured it was because I store it upright and it needs time to adjust things inside. Just for your information though I just did the weighing of a weight (using a 25 lb weight disc which was really risky cause my scale is glass). I tested out two surfaces my bathroom carpet and hard wood floor. And I weighed it twice each time here is what I got. On carpet First time 26.9 second time 23.6. Hard wood floor first time 23.6, second time 24.9. So scientifically stated a hard surface is better but the second time is also more acurate. Variables. Having used my scale on the soft surface first you could make a case that when I measured on the hard surface it wasn't really technically the "first time" but was the third. Also I had already used the scale today when I weighed myself. So I will try again tomorrow. However, all scientific experiements aside. If you take the same measurements in the same place each time you limit the amount of variables, etc. So therefore, which ever way you feel comfortable weighing yourself (for me as I said I always take the second number) if you stick with the same way each time you should be getting at least an accurate number of your weight loss or gain. Good post by the way. I will continue to experiment with my weights and scale to see what happens over the long run! (I know, I know I'm a little wierd, I guess I always secretly wanted to be a scientist lol) |
